breastfeeding/infection advice please

posted 10th Dec
My son bites me constantly and I get clogged ducts and mastitis from it. And then after the mastitis clears up, it burns so badly to nurse for like a week. It is unbearably bad and my arm on that side shakes so bad I have trouble holding his head up.

Is there a way to treat that part? Is that a separate infection? Is that standard after mastitis?

I can handle mastitis but whatever this is hurts so badly it makes me want to wean him.

They usually prescribe antibiotics for mastitis. I don't know if you have Facebook, but I highly suggest adding yourself to the Milk Matters: Lactation Support Group, it is amazing. Also check out Kellymom.com. They have great advice as well.

The infection may not have cleared up completely. I would be concerned that it may have spread? I'm not sure. I'd just go get antibiotics just to be safe.

This happens every single time, it sucks. I always know I should go to the doctor but cant bring myself to do it, lol. I was hoping someone may know if it is a normal way for mastitis to end or specifically what the issue could be so I could find a way to treat it myself.

Mine always burns afterwards for a while but never to the extent that my arms shakes or anything.

That is good to know. I think I am overly sensitive. Nursing hurt worse than labor with A for a good six weeks and i always cried about it, and even...37 months later still hurts sometimes, lol.

How long does it usually last for? Hopefully it goes away soon. The burning sensation was uncomfortable but not really painful.

Well last time it was like a week, and it hurts the whole time I am nursing, not sure if you meant total or per session, lol.

I ate so much garlic last time I cant imagine what I smelled like  .

Sorry, meant total. Are you still eating garlic now just to make sure you're getting rid of any lingering infection? I bet you smelled lovely, lol, garlic perfume is all the rage somewhere I'm sure.

It hurt so bad for the first few months that I swore I was going to quit nursing every single session.

Same here, sometimes I think I wouldn't have had PPD if I hadn't dreaded every feeding, I felt like a prisoner. I always told DH to make a bottle instead and then I'd feel guilty and cry and nurse her, lol. We were too poor to formula feed anyhow even if I wasn't opposed for other reasons. Otherwise I probably would've done it.

I probably would have if I wasn't so damn stubborn. I hate to admit defeat. I was going to suggest maybe it's a low blood sugar thing but if it's definitely related to the burning sensation then no. Sometimes when he nurses I get all light headed and a bit shaky out of the blue.

No because then I'll have to be a fat ass by myself or change, too.. and change is so much work.

Fine. I'll be supportive. You know what's really tasty? Larabars. They're fruit and nut bars. Cherry pie flavor is awesome.

I have never even heard if those. There is a whole foods right down the street but I am scared to go because I don't know how much it'll cost...

And you are right, change is too much work. I watched a documentary last night called No Impact Man and was so impressed by all that they did but then I realized it was probably mostly fake, lol.

They're so good. Our local grocery store sells them in the organic section and maybe in the health food bars usually by vitamins and stuff. They're like $1'ish a pop but so, so good.

I try not to better myself with things like documentary and educational books, so I don't have to deal with the urge to change.
