if you saw a midwife for pregnancy

posted 10th Dec
this may sound stupid, but ive never used a Midwife before only a practice of doctors. I will get a papsmear and all that stuff right? and they still do the routine blood tests and stuff?
also if you saw a midwife did you have an early Ultrasound? i didnt know how different or similar they are. im assuming they do everything a doctor would do since its a midwife that does hospital births and not homebirths.

I have had a midwife both times and I have always had bloodwork, a dating ultrasound and everything an OB would, but I always felt they were much more knowledgeable about things like keeping nausea away without meds, pain management without running right to meds....and I always felt very supported no matter what choice I made regarding my birth.

I don't think either of my midwives have done home births, either - the only thing they can;t do is perform a c-section.

Yes I had all that stuff. Mine did not do automatic US but offer them if you choose to have one.

i am seeing one now. in the office i go to, there are 2 midwives and, i think, 2 actual OB/GYN doctors. sometimes i see the midwives and sometimes i see the OB, depending on who's available. i have gotten all the same routine tests and everything done that i had with my first child (only went to an OB for that pregnancy). i got a very early ultrasound, but that was because my body is messed up and i thought i was further along that i actually was, lol. so.... idk if they always do early ultrasounds or not. idk if any office routinely does early ones if you're not high risk....

I had no pap. She was generally a lot more hands off but I did have a couple blood draws; they offer all of the same tests an OB would.

Yes my Midwife is amazing, I would highly suggest one! I actually switched last minute because my OB was trying to induce me for no reason. Best decision I've ever made! But they do labs, NST, ultrasounds, pap smears, and everything an OB would do in office.

My first was with an OB, second w midwife. My 2nd pregnancy & delivery was so much more amazing. All the same testing was done but it felt more personable. My OB didn't lay baby on my chest & midwife did. She even delayed cord clamping. Now I'm nearly done with my 3rd and actually look forward to delivery this time!

All midwives are different. Mine did pap, early u/s (but only bc I didnt know my last period date), blood tests, measurments, 20 week u/s. They are more hands off but in a good way. They see birth as a very natural process.

They do everything that a Dr does expect for surgery. You will get the exact same medical care, it will just be sooo much better and more personal.

My midwife hasn't done a pap and only does one us unless needed for dating but other than that everything is the same. However most midwives don't check your cervix until you're in labor and mine refused to discuss induction until after 41 1/2 weeks.
