infant with upper respitory infection

posted 10th Dec
my daughter is five months and had a fever of one hundred today and her dr said she has an upper respitory infection€€. he suggested that i not feed her breast milk or formula for €€3 days and just give her juice or water. also he perscribed amoxicillin. i am super nervous with the no formula/breastmilk instruction. do any of you have experience with this? i asked her dr if that was really a good idea since she's only 5 months, and asked if juice has too much sugar and he said no. i am on my phone so excuse any spelling and grammar errors please

I would give her breast milk or formula, unless she is vomiting too much. In fact, if she is breasted I would do that before anything else.

she is breastfed€€ and thats exactly what i was thinking. i think i will just cut dairy out and hopefull that will slow the mucus production

How does he know that's what she has? 100 degrees is not bad at all. And that's rediculus. I'd never deprive my baby of bm. That just seems crazy.

yeah I would still breastfeed too... and the dairy causing excess mucus is only a myth it isn't actually true, it doesn't cause the body to produce more it just causes the mucus already present to be thicker because of the fat content in milk... so that is why with upper respiratory issues they say to stay away from milk and milk products.

I did take her in€€, but i was totally thrown by his reaction. he isn't her usual doctor, and if he was i would switch, especially suggesting regular juice instead

It's just crazy cause bm is 90% water anyway. So I dont see the benefit Of not feeding her. plus it's gonna help her heal and get through it faster with all the immunities. Idk. If she's on antibiotics I would still feed her.

yeah, I was pretty sure it was awful advice. it would have been awful, she would have been starving and so frustrated, and sick. glad i asked instead of just doing it

Im surprised they would even give her antibiotics for that and especially at her age. I would continue with breastfeeding still and maybe give her a little pedialyte here and there.
