Food poisoning--15w high risk.
posted 10th Dec
I've been having violent diarrhea for 36 hours now. It cleared some but AS SOON as I ate something (bland noodle/broth soup and an apple), it was back just as bad as ever!!! I'm talking like violent painful diarrhea with abdominal cramping/convulsions every 20-30 minutes around the clock.
I'm worried that the pressure is going to cause my cervix to shorten/thin and that dehydration will cause contractions (my stitch goes in next week for the cerclage).
I'm calling my doc, but he won't be in for 2 hours and I don't want to do ER without knowing what my SPECIALIST recommends because this is nothing like a standard pregnancy.
If doc recommends going to ER and asking for ____ I'll do that or if he just calls me in a script I'll go pick it up 2 blocks from here ASAP and if he just wants me to come see him to check my cervix to see if we should move my surgery up because of this...etc
But are there any anti-diarrheal meds (I'm not barfy, just queasy from having an empty stomach) that he can actually give me at 15w (16w tomorrow).

I feel so bad for you let me know what the Dr says, I really hope there's something you can take!
It's funny DH said, "how did P get food poisoning, she only eats her own food??" Damn holiday parties

Immodium should be fine. I had awfyll dirreah with my second and my dr told me to take immodium. But call your drs office and check with the nurse if they have one on call

Immodium is the only thing my doctor allows me to take for stuff like that. But I've always been told if you have food poisoning not to take anything & just let nature run it's course.

I saw on pinterest if you mix a little jello powder (the unflavored king) into some applesauce and eat it,it will help slolidify (sp?) Your poop.

That's not an option because the cramping will cause my incompetent cervix to give out and it hasn't gotten ANY better in 36 hours and this baby NEEDS hydration and nutrients---I'm weak and lethargic and not sleeping at all because I'm spending so much time in the bathroom.
If it were a standard pregnancy i wait it out---it's not. At all.

Then maybe the best thing would be to go to the ER or something so they can give you fluids. Hope you feel better soon!

I actually had this exact problem last pregnancy. It was caused by some medicine I was taking that I got taken off of after I ended up in L&D. I ended up going in because I realized i was having contractions every couple of minutes. I let it go too long and wasn't paying attention because i was busy. I called the dr and she said Immodium is fine to take, but because I was dehydrated and stuff, I needed to be seen.
I ended up spending about 2 days in L&D while they stopped the contractions and rehydrated me. Your high risk dr should have an after hours number. The high risk dr's office i see here actually have at least one perinatologist on call 24/7. They do rounds in the hospital, so they normally just page whatever dr is doing rounds.
Long term it wasn't that big of a deal, but I was 28-29 weeks so i had already had the stitch for a while. They were worried I was going to deliver for a bit, but everything calmed down. That was one of those times where I ended up getting nuked with different meds to stop the contractions. I felt like i was floating for days.

As i said in OP---I see specialists, I want his advice before seeing ER docs not familiar with my care---ER docs will just treat me like any pregnant person, probably.

I'm not contracting yet. That's why I want to make sure I am getting the right care for me---with no contractions, ER docs will probably just give me an IV and send me home.
And if they have an after hours number I don't have it---I'll ask for it when I call the office in an hour though!
For now DH (who is at work in a meeting) is going to pick up Imodium and more Gatorade and pretzels, which I tolerated okay yesterday, and bring them after his meeting---by then I'll know if my doc wants me to go to the ER (2 blocks away), pick up a script (2 blocks away), or come to him directly (45-80 mins away depending on whether he's at his office or the hospital today----the hospital I will deliver at is about 80 mins away from here but I can go to the ER beside me if he thinks they can treat me properly and tell me what tests he wants---like a cervical length ultrasound, etc). The hospital here won't even do contraction/baby monitoring or an ultrasound until 20 weeks (ER often refuses and L&D won't see you til 20)

Apples can make it worse, do the BRAT diet, but I would skip the applesauce part of it. Also salt of the broth wouldn't be good for you either. Plain toast that is a little burnt is good. Get some pediatric if you think you need to hydrate yourself more.
I went through a 24 hour bug where it was coming out both ends when pregnant with our now infant. I just ate very plainly such as burnt toast, un-salted crackers, and bananas. I also drank a little 7-up, clear sodas tend to help me not vomit.

You could go to the ER and have an IV put in while you wait for your doctor to come in. I wouldn't just sit around knowing how dehydrated you are especially since you are high risk. dehydration = contractions

You actually need a little salt when you're dehydrated (not much!) because it helps you retained water instead of peeing it right out. Thats why Gatorade and soorts drinks have sodium and added electrolytes and why they are better than plain water for dehydration.
The soup last night was home made broth, so it was completely unsalted. I have "lightly salted" pretzels and crackers. All my toast is whole wheat, so that's definitely not a good idea.
BRAT diet and clear liquids is not helping at all. I've been doing that for 36 hours and every time I eat anything it gets worse til it all comes out.

Usually most office's have the after hours number on their answering machine... I also got the number in a Packet they give us at our initial pregnancy appointment....u could possibly even call L&D and ask for dr on call.... I have IC too so I can imagine how nervous you are right now.... Push lots and lots of fluids, even though it comes right out, but the dehydration along with cramping is no good for IC..... Are you trying the BRAT or BRATY diet? Bananas, plain white rice, applesauce, dry toast, and yogurt....
