Washing mouth with soap. Abuse?

What do you think? Is it a form of abuse to wash a child's mouth out with soap for talking back or using curse words? Do you think it should be reportable to CPS? Do you think it would effective in cleaning up a child's vocabulary?

I don't do it, but it's far from abuse in IMO.

With all the chemicals in soap, id say its not good..

Nope. My parents did it. I did it to break DD of her biting habit. That was actually the last time she ever bit anyone after 2 months of biting everyone. I think it's highly effective and not abuse at all unless you are pouring body wash down their throat. We used Irish Spring bar soap and made her bite it after she drew blood one day.

I never got the point in putting soap in someones mouth. Its not like there mouth is dirty.

Yes I think it's abuse. Any type of physical punishment is abuse imo. Any type of punishment that scars the psyche is abuse as well. There are far better ways to discipline your kid than making them ingest soap. It's not going to kill them but it's definitely not healthy for them either, that's why there's poison control numbers on the back of most soaps.
It's definitely not effective. If a kid quits talking back because you washed their mouth out with soap it's clearly not because they respect you and see the error of their ways. It is because they are AFRAID of you. Parenting through fear is abuse plain and simple.

I dont think its abusive or CPS worthy but I also dont think it would be effective, just based off stories my grandma would tell me about my dad and my aunt.

Erm.... I dunno about abuse, but it's groooss. I got threatened with it a lot as a kid, so I decided to try it to see how bad it was. Yeah. I decided it wasn't worth the risk.   So I'd say it's effective.

It "can" be abuse. If said child ingests enough of the soap it can be harmful.

And I'm sorry.. it's an smurf move. There are better ways to teach your child not to have a potty mouth, or "mouth off"

It's not a disciplinary action I would personally use but its far from abuse.

Yes, it's abusive. Soap is not supposed to be ingested. It can make a kid sick  

I think it's horrible. My mother used to do it to me and it didn't work, it just made me really resent her.

I think children are an example of their parents, so why punish your child for something you more than likely taught them? I wouldn't say it's abuse as it could be a lot worse but it's definitely cruel.

It is definitely more of a symbolic thing.
