MIL used vinegar with my SO. It seems like a better alternative and I'm sure it would have the same effect

It absolutely is true for MANY many people. I've yet to meet someone who shoved a bar of soap in a kid's mouth who didn't feel it was appropriate to spank or belittle their children. I'm not saying every single person who does it will be more abusive (keyword *more* because I 100% believe it is abuse) but it's worth an investigation imo. And yes I believe spanking is abuse too.

my brother always said that soap in the childs mouth was more abusive because they child could get sick not including the germs that can sit on soap can make then sick so with my 2 nieces and nephew he would get a drop of vinger and put that in there mouth if they would talk back to the point that they just would not listen, his children listen to him to this day and 2 of them are teenagers!!!! now in my case I have always felt that it is better to talk to your children, and they will talk back, I have been giving my son options and valuing his opinion since he could give it back to me, and my son listens very well, if he need disipline then its time out and normally mom can count to 3 before he is saying he is sorry and will be good, so talking is the best in my case

I got hot sauce in my mouth for talking back when I was little...that smurf sucked   I never experienced soap though.

We don't have pot in our home, we don't smoke it outside of our home either. Last time I smoked was when I was 19. It's just not my thing anymore.
And I still stand with what I said originally, it "can" be a form of abuse, it certainly is a physical punishment and if taken too far it can be harmful. Many parents know when the cut off is, many don't. It's all case by case stuff.

BUT

My parents used it with us kids when we were little (it was either soap or hot mustard powder or tobasco sauce) ... i tell you what, we NEVER did it again after having to go through that.

So yes, very effective in the case of me & my two siblings haha!!

I think it's disgusting.

Not something worth having your children taken away for though, unless it's like a regular occurrence.

How can you judge parenting and discipline styles if you aren't a parent yourself? Have YOU been bitten by your child hard enough to draw blood multiple times?
