Dexter's Birth Story
posted 9th Dec
I did not think I was going to make it to my due date (12-6-12). Not at all. So when I was still pregnant on my due date I was a little down. Understanding but wanted a baby in my arms already! Went to work (teaching) Thursday, the 6th, getting sympathetic looks all day.
Fast forward to that night.
Waking up as frequent as usual to use the bathroom. At 2am I wake up to go and in the strain to get out of bed got a little wet. Not enough to even change the sheets, just had to wipe myself off a little bit. Nothing kept coming so I obviously assume I peed myself! Lay back down but couldn't sleep through the cramping. Remembering that with my first labor I grabbed my phone and started timing them.
They were 4-5 mins apart! Completely tolerable and no broken water so I just came to the living room to watch T.V., get online and let DH get some more rest. After a few hours they had slowed to every 7 mins. And eventually every 10. But I called L &D, told them what I experienced and she said it'd be ok if I came in. (My last labor was very quick and I'm an hr from the hospital.)
Took DS to daycare around 8:30 (contractions about 8-10 mins apart, very tolerable) and got to hospital around 9:30. Got checked in, gown on, whole shebang. Nurse checked me. 3cm, pretty thick and high head. Yet contracting every now and then. She called my doc to report (who was not on duty this weekend). Doc didn't want to do anything to induce so said if I didn't progress in an hour to send me home.
AH! Send me home? No way was I going home. Just to have them pick up and drive right back? Nope. The nurse was understanding and wonderful. Stalled a little to check me.....at 11:30 I was 3.5 cm. Cervix was WAY behind the baby bc he was posterier and she "thinks" she can feel my bag of water back there. Told me to go walk for 1 hour and come back to check again so she can call doc.
Came back at 12:30. Still contracting but still every 7ish mins. I was a 4, yippee! They were keeping me! The girl beside me was about to have a baby too and seemingly a lot sooner so she said she wasn't going to start pitocin until she was about to deliver. Doc came in to break my water. Lots of pain of him checking me and attempting to find/burst it. We realized that it had already busted this morning and his head was plugging it up. A predicted flood was joked about when time for delivery lol.
Started pit around 4 (i think?). They checked me an hour later and I was a SEVEN!!! Doc came in and said if you want an epi you better ask now and your rate. (7 is the cut off. If I got to 8 before the doc came I wasn't allowed.) After a quick debate in my head I decided to get it. Things were coming faster and stronger. About 5:30 I was being prepped for the epi. It went very smoothly. Didn't hurt at all and the doc was great.
Took a bit for my legs to get heavy and I could still feel a bit on my left side belly but it was very mild. Much relief. **Then the WHOLE family came at the same time. I mean both sides of the family and a couple friends. In my door. Sorry guys...not entertaining! Please find the newly renovated waiting area! lol My parents had my son and brought him in to us. We gave him his big brother present so he could play in the waiting room.
5:45 ish LOTS OF PAIN in my lower belly. I had a steady stream of the epi. It couldn't really have worn off but it was not as strong. I was wiggling my toes. Legs up, starting to push which seemed impossible. I was so uncomfortable, no urge to push but doc said let's go. I was not fully effaced but when I pushed doc saw it was sliding around baby. We weren't waiting. I pushed, loudly. Very loudly. Once head was out the nurse helped my husband put my legs into a very uncomfortable position to assist getting his shoulders around the lip of my cervix. One more push and he was completely out. Followed by alllll of the fluid.
WHAT A RELIEF! I had zero pain after that. Zero. Started bawling like a baby immediately. No cutting, no tears, no stitches. Wow.

6:08 pm. He was 7lbs 3oz and 20 3/4 inches long.
He took to the breast very quickly. He latched on and believe me....would not let go for anyone. Our first visitor was our oldest son. I couldn't have been happier.
My recovery is going WONDERFULLY! I have the expected painful cramping and sore nipples but I have been able to walk around, sit, shower, and everything since delivery. I couldn't sit for 2 weeks with my first it seemed!
Boobs are very tender on the outside right now. I can feel them getting very warm and hard so it seems that my milk is on the way. Thankfully! This little boy is waiting anxiously!
