Hand dominance in babies

posted 9th Dec
How early does it show? Did you notice your baby using one hand over the other and it ending up being their dominant hand?

When Wesley reaches for toys, he usually reaches with his left hand. He "crawls" (more like an army crawl- he doesn't use his legs lol) with his left arm first. He also plays on his side, only leaning on his left arm.

We're thinking he's going to be a lefty.

I thought DD was going to be a lefty. She used to use it a lot, but recently I've noticed her starting to use her right hand for stuff. I've been wondering this too.

She did everything with her left hand until 1 1/2 when she started using utensils. Since then she's very obviously right handed.

DD started really showing hand dominance at 15mos old with using utensils.

She favored her left hand and still uses her left hand to write, but uses her right hand for scissors.

My daughter used both hands until about 2 then we started noticing she used her left more... now thats she is in school, we were told she is definitely left handed.

kids do not actually set it in stone until they are closer to 4 or 5. In Kinder, my son used both, but they made him pick. He's a lefty like his dad.

I thought DS would be a left for sure. DH is a lefty, and I'm mostly ambidextrous. I do pretty much everything with my left hand but write and use scissors. DS did a lot of reaching and eating with his left hand until he was almost 2, but he's 4 1/2 now and definitely a righty.

My LO was exactly like yours always using the left hand early on. I thought it was interesting because no one in my family is left handed. Then as he started to get some toys I noticed that he would adapt.

This is his favorite toy
and he had a hard time using his left hand to put the people in the slot, so he would pick up the little topsy tumbler guy with his left hand and then place it in his right hand and use his right hand to place the topsy tumbler in the slot

Now at a year he seams very ambidextrous. When I told his Dad how weird I thought it was because no one in my family was left handed and So is not left handed he said... Well all my brothers are left handed and my Dad is ambidextrous.

So I don't know what will happen in more time, LO is a year old now
