Question about feedings

My son is breastfed but I pump and bottle feed due to the fact that he will not stay latched on long enough to fill himself up. I feed on demand and that is usually 13 times a day with the average amount being 2 ounces...He is 13 days old.. Am I overfeeding? I heard babies use bottle feeding as a way to 'comfort' themselves so they will suck even if they are not hungry... I feed on demand like I said but is he eating TOO much?
He sleeps through the night and has 5 oz for 5 hours but during the day it's different...

I don't think you can over feed with breast milk

First of all newborns dont always stay latched for long. You need to help them latch on again. Many times they will nurse for short periods every half hour or so. This is to boost your supply. It is clusterfeeding. Or sometimes baby might want to nurse for an hour straight.


I dont believe in limiting what baby eats. Feed them as much and as often as they please. They need it to grow! I'd stop the bottle of you intend to breastfeed.

I saw a lactation consultant and everything and my son just wouldn't. He'd stay latched for 3-4 seconds then shake his head away, scream, wiggle, anything to get AWAY from the breast. I would sit and try to feed for 2 hours until I gave up and tried again for an hour. This went on for days until he was literally starving to death crying every 10 minutes for close to 13 hours so I gave in and pumped. He breastfeeds NOW 3-4 times a day but still uses the bottle, lol. Before I started pumping though he wouldn't breastfeed period. I felt bad starving him so I pumped. He breastfed fine int he hospital too, which is weird. But he goes days without being able to stay on so either something is wrong with me or he's just difficult. I can't let him starve though. He lost a whole pound in just 3 days

three days after birth? Because that's normal. Babies lose weight the first few days.

No, it was 10 days after. He had already lost 10 oz and at his first appt (5 days after birth), and then went down another pound within the 3 days following that appointment, making it almost 2 lbs that he has lost. He's gained a lb since I've been pumping and doing it that way, so... I just wanted to make sure he was fed, he was 7 lbs when he was born and went down to 5 lbs
