My 16 month old has what her pedi thinks is a hernia about 3 inches above her belly button... she meets with the pedi. surgeon on the 27th.
The last couple months it was only noticeable when she was all stretched out (like when she put her arms up for "soooo big") but now (the last week) it is noticeable 100% of the time, and it appears to be bigger. Today it even looked purple for awhile then a reddish purple and now it's a really light shade of reddish purple.. it looks as if it's a faded bruise. She rubs it all the time so we've been putting one-pieces on her so she can't get to it as easy..
Is the redness a bad thing or completely normal?

If you still aren't able to push the hernia in, the herniated intestine may have become trapped (incarcerated) in the abdominal wall — a serious condition that may require immediate medical attention. This condition may be accompanied by nausea, vomiting, fever, rapid heart rate, sudden pain that quickly intensifies, and a hernia bulge that turns red, purple or dark. If any of these signs or symptoms occur, call your doctor right away.

its not good, call now. see what they say. Id think er. but all i know is from what research ive done.

Id get it checked out. Any change in a hernia can be a concern. How long are they going to let her go before repairing it. My neice has on right in her belly button and they said if it doesnt close by itself by the age of 2 they will do surgery to fix it.

Okay, I will call. The ped. surgeon is just shy of 3 hours away and that's the closest. one :/

I don't know. She meets with the surgeon for the first time on the 27th. It's causing her discomfort her pedi thinks since she is always picking at it.

It would probably be a good idea to get it checked as soon as possible...hernias can be dangerous.

Yes, they are trying to get ahold of another surgeon. The two there are in surgery right now.
