Credit Reporting and applying for a job

posted 9th Dec
As of recently, employers have become extremely picky with choosing new employees because the pool of candidates is so large. Many qualified individuals are turned down for one reason or another. I recently saw a job posting on craigslist that required all applicants have a driver's license, a clean 3 year driving record, and their own vehicle to work at a call center that was right off the light rail. Most employers also require you to submit to a credit check on top of the standard background check.

Do you think it is fair or right for an employer to deny someone a job that they are otherwise qualified for because of poor credit history?

NO!

Alot of people have poor credit because they have lost their jobs. If your job is not loaning you money then I feel your credit score is no right of theirs to know.

No. I have terrible credit because of student loans when I was a stupid teenager. If I'm denied a job for it, how am I ever supposed to fix my credit?

I think it makes as much sense as people getting penalized for paying off their debt and then closing their credit lines to prevent them from getting into any further debt.

Riiiiiiggghhhttt?

You try to live within your means and it hurts your credit and, thus, may prevent you from getting a good paying job? Dumb.

I stand firmly that my credit information is none of your business unless you are loaning me money.

how on earth is someone suppose to pay off debts when they are without an income? It blows my mind.

I think it's such bullsmurf. How are people supposed to better themselves? Try to do the right thing and you get screwed over...not once but twice.

Depends on the job. If the job has to do with financing, accounting, money-managment, then yes. A company should be allowed to ask for a credit report. But a job completely unrelated to finance? No.

What kinds of jobs are you applying to? Do you have any certificates/schooling? How does your resume look?

I think it's incredibly stupid and nosy. There really isn't a reason to question things like someones credit score and whether they have a car......as long as they show up and perform their job, who the hell cares, lol.

its all retail, desk jobs, things that mostly pay minimum wage. and i have my GED and no other schooling right now. and my resume is just simple because the only skills i have are proficiency on the computer and being bilingual.

A couple of years ago, my husband was denied a job at a warehouse doing basic stocking because he had poor credit.

It depends on the job. Like I can see government positions and things involving money.

Have you thought about getting your CNA? I work as a nurses' aid, and the money is decent for the level of education I have.
