Wow, I have never heard of employers requiring a credit check for completely unrelated work.

My husband is a manager in a finance related department and never had to submit his credit information.

Though, I will say, that most of the time, a person's credit history can be a good indicator of how responsible they are. That's really the only justification I can think of for it.

To be quite honest, when I lived in Oregon, I never had to submit to a credit check for a job. It wasn't until I moved to Arizona that I started having to. Maybe it's a right to work state thing? I also lived in Oregon before the market tanked, so it may have changed since then too.

Not sure how much younger you're talking, but even bankruptcy is removed from your credit after 7-10 years.

I realize there are a few extenuating circumstances, which is why I said most of the time.

From what we were taught by my professor in college (he was the only one who taught the HR specific classes), they do credit check to weed out people who are unreliable - but I don't agree with it. Just because you have fallen on hard times and have bad credit does not mean you won't show up, do your job and perform well. And it's only really started since the start of the recession - which to me, makes even less sense lol.

I think its unfair, but from what I understand most banks are allowed too if you are applying for a position there. I havent heard of any other place asking for a credit check though

I understand why many companies do it--it is a loss prevention measure. I guess people with good credit are less likely to steal. I know of many companies that do that. I see no issue with it.
