Abuse of Emergency Rooms.

posted 9th Dec
Do you think ERs are being abused more often these days?
I don't mean for pills and what not, I'm talking about people with non-emergency situations crowding up the ERs instead of utilizing urgent care centers or waiting until the doctor opens on Monday.

Yes, especially by pregnant women who want immediate ultrasounds.

Sometimes, but people's perspectives of emergency situations differ.

We don't have an urgent care so the hospital is all that's here besides that doctor. I feel like every time I go to the ER there is a few drunks in there pretty much just whining. I try not to go unless it's something serious.

Some people are only able to get care that way. Not everyone has access to the means to see a physician as needed. So they take the only route available to them, the ER.

Yes, to the nth degree here. I had to take my daughter into the ER at the children's hospital here when she was 9 months old because she was bleeding through her nose and ears and throwing up after she came home from daycare (apparently one of the other kids hit her with a metal Tonka truck and her now former provider neglected to mention it to me until the next day when I was beating down the door for answers). There were people there whose kids were running around playing and screaming and only had a runny nose or a loose tooth.

It's mostly because of the lack of insurance coverage a large percentage of Americans have an issue with that causes it.

This!
I've only been twice since becoming pregnant.
Once because I fell, the second for evaluation of preterm labor. I didn't receive an ultrasounds either time, nor did I ask for one. Popple need to leave the er open for those who need it.

I think that people who go to the ER for pills are more concerning...

But I'm not really sure that it's abuse. Some people don't understand what an emergency truly is. I've went before when I probably shouldn't have for a migraine, but how do I know that it wasn't going to lead to something else if not stopped or examined? My kids have been for croup, but with asthma, I don't take the chance. These are usually over the weekend/after business hours for their clinic.

Some things seem trivial, but sometimes those "trivial" things can kill you. I don't risk waiting a weekend in those cases.

Yes but I also think that people feel like it's an emergency when it's not.
