Breast Milk.

posted 9th Dec
The first day I came home monday, I had engorged boobs. So I pumped. I got around 3 ounces. Now it seems like my supple gas stopped. I may get a half ounce or so. It depresses me. So bad. Any ideas? Help? I wanna breast feed my baby, and he doesn't take well to the infamil that the nurses are giving him in the hospital. He won't eat it, maybe gets a half ounce down then stops or throw it up. I think its from him not being abel to eat for the first 5 days of his life, and he barely knows how to take to the nipple/bottle as well. So they have a feedng tube for him ://

But any help about my supple? Please?

How often are you pumping? Are you pumping at night as well?

maybe a dumb question, but why isn't the baby at the breast? was baby preterm or something? baby has a feeding tube now and they let you go home? I need more clarity here

He was born full term but non-responsive at birth. no heart beat, lost a lot of oxygen, and blood flow to the brain. He was breech at labor, he flipped the kicked threw the water sac, then pushed the umbilical cord out threw my vagina. Born emergency c-section, and was dead. took them 2 minutes to revive him, then rushed to childrens hospital.

And they dont want to let him feed from my boo because they don't know how much he takes in. and ive been pumping every 2 hours. but its still low.

I always got a lot better output when using hand expressing while pumping at the same time.

Do you have a double electric hospital grade pump to use? If not, what do you have?

I use the one at the hospital they have, it works pretty good for the most part. But the one I use at home it a single pump, made by playtex.
Its nice.

I know it is probably nice, but most of the ones you get at mainstream stores aren't really meant for full time pumping mommas & lack the suction & such the hospital ones have. I have a Playtex Double Embrace & like it for part time pumping, but I am not sure I'd trust it for full time. Do you qualify for WIC, they will give you a double electric loaner that IS hospital grade for at home use.

What kind of pump are you using? Are you massaging the breasts while pumping? You do understand that 1) pumps are not as efficient as a nursing baby and what you pump in not a reflection of what you are currently producing. 2) at 5 days out you are not yet at your peak production and the milk is still in the process of "coming in" and is going to increase 3) you don't always produce the same amount consistantly and this could very be your normal for that time of day.

I would suggest setting up meetings with lactation consultants. They can accurately tell how much baby gets by weighing before and after a breastfeeding. You may find that baby will breastfeed better then bottle feeding

Supply** ?

Anyways, CAN you feed him normally or does he have to take the feeding tube?

I would just put him to breast as often as possible. Just keep trying. Maybe just laying in bed with him beside you and keep offering your nipple. Don't get frustrated... just keep offering. If you are feeding him formula and he hasn't taken to the breast, than your supply is probably drying up.

Do you have an electric pump or a manual? I find that I can pump a lot more manually than with the electric. I hate electric pumps.

Pump ever 2-3 hours, around the clock for now. AND offer the breast as much as possible. If LO isn't acting hungry, just do it hourly. Eventually he should take to it. I wouldn't offer a bottle, AT ALL.

no appropriate for exclusive pumping you NEED to have a double electric pump in order to maintain a supply let alone build one. Those single pumps are not meant for this kind of use

Push the water (but no more than 80 ounces). Keep a schedule, up the schedule if you don't like the supply. (I went from a three hour schedule to a two hour schedule). Cuddle with your baby (if you can). It's emotional as well as physical so make sure you are relaxed.

Talk to the lactation consultant. (Mine was no help, but maybe you will have better luck).

Expressing helps too.

Wow that's crap on your hospitals part. My nicu has them Bfing full time before going home and they only allow bm in the nicu. It's very important for him to get your milk. Your drs are whack if they aren't giving
Him bm. You need to push for kangaroo time and nipple time.

if they take the bottle, they are less likely to take to breast. your baby usually wants breast this early. you dont have too much milk early on, just colostrum so dont get discouraged, but natural stimulation (baby to breast ) helps the "let down" reflex of your body.
