baby - as a word in relation to pregnancy/birth

posted 9th Dec
Okay - I hear all the time in abortion debates the topic of the use of the word "baby".

What I see is pro-lifers calling all unborns "baby" - and generally all pro-lifers trying to correct that saying it is a "fetus".

But if we are talking technical medical terminology & correct medical terms - then all post birth babies are either neonates (under 28 days old) or infants from 28 days to 1 yr. Baby, while being a common term, is not technically a medical definition of a born person under a year old - "neonate" or "infant" is.

And I get it that when pro-lifers say "baby" it is generally an attempt to guilt or whatever - but frankly I think you can call a fetus or born infant a baby & it makes no difference & I am not sure why it gets people pucker butted.

I am, BTW, pro-choice, not that it matters for the sake of this debate.

So what is YOUR take on the use of the word baby & why....?

I agree with everything you just said.
I think it probably makes it easier to abort when you take away the word baby and refer to it as an embryo or fetus. It's taking away focus that the embryo would develop into a lovely little baby, which I think I would have to do if I were to abort. It's kind of depersonalising it - I don't think there's anything wrong with this, by the way. 100% pro choice right hurr.

I guess it's the circumstance a person decides to use it and for what. If the person decides to keep the baby even being pro choice they would announce to others "We're having a baby" not "We're having a neonate" or We're having an infant" now if the women decides she doesn't want to keep going with the pregnancy, she would relate the pregnancy as not a baby, it's just fetus or embryo and that's where I find it confusing. It's only to the womens necessity, whether she believes it's situation or a gift. Especially when a women goes in for her first ultrasound only being weeks early, the OB/Gyno is showing you and she'll say "Look that's your baby!" or "Can you see your baby?" Depends on the event how the women perceives it. I'm pro-life by the way.

Kind of OT of course, but I have had recurrent loss & in my medical chart they list it as "habitual aborter". Nice eh? I about shat myself when I read it....as no one explained to me what the term meant. AND I find it extra annoying to even be labelled at all as anything because we've had testing & the only conclusion they came to is that it is an issue with Dh, not me...so I still get listed that way regardless & his chart says NOTHING. I think it should at least say spermicus crapicus or something. LOL

That's more a social norm than anything else (doc referring to it as a baby).

Lmao!

I guess it's because a miscarriage is a spontaneous abortion, but that is such an awful sounding term

to me a baby is a term that can be used from conception to around 2yrs old.

I consider an unborn to be a baby aswell as a fetus. I considered the child i CHOSE to abort a baby, and i still dont think i'm a baby killer. A baby is just a term...

That's where I am with it.

I also get annoyed that whenever I have an u/s they ask me how many time si have been pregnat, how many living children I have, how many abortion, how many miscarriages...and the reason I am annoyed is that they NEVER ask details regarding the miscarraiges, as in - did I have a D&C or not, etc - which would be the ONLY reason to ask about natural or elective abortion, because the assumption is that an elective abortion could cause damage (such as Asherman's syndrome) to the uterus potentially - but so can a D&C for spontaneous abortion....so i do get annoyed that they don't ask. I shouldn't I guess because I haven't actually had a D&C - but I guess I still think it is bias somehow NOT to ask.

You can't hear it yet - not until about 10 weeks - but you can see it on u/s.

I had a D&C for both an elective and spontaneous abortion so i agree. It can cause damage, i have endometriosis which i've been told could have been caused by them. I may never fall pregnant again and i have extreme periods that put me in hospital from the blood loss and pain.

Scientifically/medically speaking, it is an embryo up to 11ish weeks, and a fetus until birth. Then a neonate until 28 day, then an infant.
