I'm trying to breastfeed the new little one and no matter how hard i try, he will not latch. I've even tried different holds but still nothing

Have you tried the plastic things that pull the nipple out?

Has baby ever latched? Is this a new issue? How has baby been eating until now?

why jump to nipple shield? Unless there are issues with her nipples... she shouldn't jump to a shield. It doesn't provide adequate stimulation, and can cause more problems than it helps.

OP... don't try for too long, calm baby first. Stimulate baby with your nipple and pull baby in fast when he/she opens up. Have you worked with a lactation consultant at all? Do you have friends who BF that could help?

I'm still in the hospital but there is no LC here at night. He has latched before but it took myself and 2 other lactation consultants to make him latch. Its frustrating!

He has latched once before but i had a ton of help. I'm still on the hospital from delivery, so this is a new problem. I've never.BF before so this is discouraging.

My daughter was a lot like that. Try to make sure baby is calm and you are relaxed. Pinch your nipple so that you can get A LOT of it into LO's mouth. At first I thought that it was too much but they need your help at first to get the hang of it. Also they're building their mouth muscles. My daughter didn't start patching consistently for about a week. I pumped and paced her bottle feedings and just kept trying. It probably would've happened sooner if I would've made sure to never try to latch when she was all worked up. It just makes it harder for you both.

Try helping him by putting your nipple in his mouth and moving it up and down. It takes time I didn't get LO to latch until I was home in my comfort zone. You and him have to learn together do not get discouraged

Have patience momma. It takes babies a minute to figure it out.

Maybe you can pump if you don't think he's getting enough milk.
But trust me he will learn ,it all takes time mama.
Play with your nipple around his mouth and squeeze it so it has some milk coming out and when he opens up pull his head in fast

Pumping is not a good idea right now. if you are having latch issues, alternative feeding is not going to resolve them, it will only serve to make them worse. :/ Also - pumps are not known for being able to do much for removal of colostrum anyway - they are really designed for that. Colostrum is much thicker than milk & is made in much smaller quantities. FOR SURE - if it is down to supplementing with formula or trying to pump, then pumping is preferable - but it is best to really really give it a good go at getting him latched if it is at all feasible. I know they don't have an LC on duty - but don't that have a SINGLE nurse there that has actually breastfed who might be able to help? if not they ought to be ashamed & close up shop.
