Doing a degree you don't need to get a job.

posted 9th Dec
I'm considering going back to university next year online to do a degree in communications and creative writing. I already have a career and love what I do (IT tech for an ISP), and therefore I would solely be doing this to help my writing style and get me published. I don't need to do this course to get a job nor would it really even help me in my current career.

Is it selfish of me to want to be doing this? My SO is fine with me doing it and we can more than afford it with HECS and then only doing one or two classes per semester? Should I just be grateful with what I've got and try to get published on my own merits rather than take a place someone else might need?

No, it's totally not selfish at all! You should always take every opportunity to embrace education!

I don't think it would hurt you to get the degree. Think about it, we are always learning daily. You could learn a few new things that could make you better than you are right now. Never pass up a chance to further your education.

Being selfish isn't always a bad thing. I loved school and if I could I would take some classes here and there. Just no money or time right now.

That's what I'm thinking I currently have a nursing degree but there's no point going further with that as I couldn't do a desk job with nursing. I love writing its my passion and my everything, if I could write for the rest of my life and support my family with it I would be the happiest person on earth.

OMG if I could find the time I'd go back to school to study anything & never consider it selfish. I love to learn & it has done nothing but help me in my life. Do whatever works for you. If you have enough money & time, then go for it!

I am getting a Bachelors degree in something I don't need to get into a non-nursing MSN degree all it requires is a bachelors in something other than nursing, 3.3 gpa or higher and a few bio pre-regs so I am also taking a biology minor lol it's not selfish to educate yourself it is a great thing that you should be proud of keep up the good work and good luck in classes.

Hubby practically said that i HAD to study! i get house bound easily and while i was pregnant with DD i enrolled part time doing postgrad in biomed at curtin. Been pretty interesting and i can probably look at doing a masters at telethon if I can get the scholarship. Id go for it, just dont stress yourself out so that you can learn and keep the enthusiasm for the topic.

I have 30 credit points towards lab med at curtin but had to give it up because I had to go back to work full time and just couldn't work my on-campus classes around it. Now after 12 months I love my job so much I can't imagine going back and doing lab med.

I love writing but unfortunately no W.A university does a creative writing course on line so I'm going with Griffith.

Degrees and courses aren't ONLY for getting jobs. If you can afford it and have the time then it's certainly not selfish

I don't think it is selfish. At some point I think I'm going to slowly start taking college classes, and I have zero interest in re-entering the workforce again for a long time. I'll be homeschooling, but it doesn't mean that I have to give up on my interests and all of that.

DH did a minor in creative writing and would spend 30mins on an assignment at the tav at curtin and get 80-100%!! He really enjoyed it and wants to take on writting as a hobby and eventually try to publish.
I found it nearly impossible trying to work and study (internal). When we got married, i moved up to Tom Price and did study (i added a chemistry major to my undergrad) externally part time and was working. Its definitely do-able!
