Health related issue

posted 8th Dec
I am getting more and more concerned. The females in my family have a long history of colon health problems without a diagnosis that I am aware of.

My grandmother has had to have colostomy and cannot eat any type of seed, lettuce, etc. My mother recently had surgery due to what I was told as holes in her colon.

I have always known my problems would be coming, so I take fiber supplements. I know I should take a probiotic but that's not my question.

So since entering adult hood, I have had issues about every month or two where my body seems to purge itself. I have painful cramps in my intestines along with diarrhea. The past couple of years, it's more like once a month.

NOW it occurs at least once a month, sometimes twice, and it is so uncomfortable and painful. It usually only lasts a day but I am now on day two of horrible cramping pain and diarrhea.

I plan to visit a doctor for a colonoscopy soon but what can I expect? Has anyone had these symptoms with a diagnosis? I am just kind of wondering what disorder this could be, and google is of no help.

Have you ever been checked for ulcerative colitis? You sound exactly like my friend but she was diagnosed at 5

No I haven't. My parents weren't big on doctors or proper health care. One time I stepped on a nail and it was stuck in my foot and they didn't even take me to the hospital.

Is it genetic?

My son does something similar but then a few times a month he is extremely constipated. He was diagnosed with IBS. I'm not sure if you have the constipation either though.

I know once a month during my period I cant seem to stop going but with your family history it is likely not that.

I'm not sure what a colonoscopy all entails but I wish you the best. Hopefully someone knows more than I do.

I'm not sure. But that being said, she isn't in touch with her biological father so she wouldn't know if it's from his side or not

I'm not in touch with my mother so I can't find out what her diagnosis was.

Yeah, period smurfs suck

I just know based on my family that it's only going to get worse as I get older. They didn't take care of the problems early. I'm hoping to avoid surgeries like they had.

Can it be treated with medication? Or is it something that you just kinda work around?

They can give you medicine to relieve the symptoms but you just have to learn what makes it act up and not eat/drink those things

Not sure if this was mentioned but if you get a colonoscopy, ask if they can put you under for it. I've never personally had one but I hear they're painful. Don't let that discourage you though. I would definitely recommend getting it done given your family history.
