Can you refuse?!?

Ok, I am a first time mommy and trying to educate myself as much as possible. I just read a thing on yahoo news about these two baby boys who had right identication bracelets and everything, but the nurse didnt check the bracelet with the bassinet and both where put in the wrong bassinet and sent to their wrong mommies. Well the one mommy ended up breastfeeding the baby, and once it was discovered the infant went for HIV/Hepatitis testing and will have to do so every 3 months for the first year of life. I know it is very rare these things happen but they DO happen. I mean I'm sure there are nurses that has had something happen and they don't say anything for the risk of losing their job or whatever. So my question is can you refuse your baby going to the nursery or leaving your room? How far do your rights go as far as making decisions for your LO? I'm on my phone or I would post the link to the story.

the only time they have to leave your room is for any testing or shots, other than that the baby will be in your room

but i mean.. you should sort of remember what your baby looks like

Depends on hospital policy. I was on mag so I couldnt be alone with the baby at all. If my husband had to leave for whatever reason my son had to be wheeled down to the nurses station or nursery.
But with my first my son stayed with me the whole time except for his circumcision, after that he had to stay in the nursery for awhile but if you're not doing that I'm sure he can stay with you as long as you want. Dependent on hospital policy.

most hospitals check when they leave your room and enter with the baby they make you read off the numbers to verify the baby is yours

upon the baby going back to the mom, both the moms and babys bracelets should have been checked and matched up. so the nurse slipped up twice.
but yeah, i'm pretty sure you can request that baby stays with you or your SO (or another family member) is with baby at all times

When I had my daughter 1, I knew what she was wearing. 2 I knew what MY kid looked like and 3 I checked her bracelet every time I got her. I don't see how a PARENT could not realize they got the wrong child.

Right? Unless she was doped up on heavy morphine but surely her partner was there? My son was easy to recognize he was the only baby there with a full head of hair lol the nurses had fun and returned him to me after his first bath with a parted comb over lol it was cute

This. But my DH goes EVERYWHERE with our newborns.

The nurses read the hospital bracelet & did the other mom have HIV for them to check it for the next three months. Cause if she did & the hospital knew they wouldn't let the mom breastfeed

thank you guys for all the replies!! This is very true I don't understand how the one mommy did not know the baby wasn't hers!! Obviously I don't know the whole routine of what they do with babies so thank you for reassuring me that they are "supposed" to check the bracelets and such.

I don't either. But then again, my kids look exactly like my DH when they pop out. And as a mother, I remember what my kids look like, and I'm that mom calling asking how much longer is it going to take.

The article said that the HIV/hepatitis testing on the infant came back negative and was a precautionary they suggested for the biological parents to par take in. The hospital released an apology letter and said.they would pay for all the additional testing the child required for the first year of life that was relevant to the accident.

Know something, that is your baby.. so you can choose and refuse what you like, my son will not be leaving my room and if so i will be with him he will not be going to no nursery in fact every test that they need to do can be done while the baby is on me except the weight.. just know what you want before you go in.
