Is there EVER a perfect time to get pregnant?

posted 7th Dec
My husband and I were playing with the thought of having a second child since a while now... There is no question IF we want a second child, just when. I am 24 and he is 26. We just moved from Germany to the States 6 months ago.

The whole move cost us about 15.000 Dollars. We had to get 2 cars (we both are working), we had to get all new furniture (cheaper than shipping from Germany but still pricey), immigration papers (I'm German) aso.. So yea. That being said, we dished out a lot of cash the last couple of months just starting out. Slowly but surely we are getting comfortable with our money again (we both work).
We have a 4-year old daughter, she was not planned (I was 19 when I got pregnant) and we both didn't have jobs, it was a tough time to begin with, but there was never a doubt to keep her. She is the most precious thing in our lives.

Now, we would like to have a second child, but we just seem to find many reasons not to do it now. Is that normal?! Once of those doubts were that we just moved so recently that it is not as secure as it should be, we live in a 2 bedroom apartment for now, and over all, we do not have pregnancy insurance. I do not qualify for medicare or anything the State offers due to being an immigrant, and we make too much anyway. So, having a child costs 10000 at the minimum crossing fingers that there are no risks and everything goes well. We do not have that 10.000 right now.

On the other hand, I do not want my children to be too far apart in matters of age, and our daughter is already 4 1/2. So if I would get pregnant right now, they'd be 5 years apart, which is already a big gap.

Is there ever a perfect time to have children?! I mean.. Isn't there always bills to pay, or some sort of circumstance that doesnt make the moment "perfect" or is there actually a perfect time to have a baby?

Nope there's NEVER a "right" time. There's always going to be crap that makes it hard. Just do it if you want to and then make it work.

I don't there's a "perfect" time. Life will always interfere.   If you don't want your children too far apart in age, then I'd say you should probably start soon.

I don't think there is ever a perfect time to have a child BUT I wouldn't do it if you haven't got insurance and don't qualify for any. I'm not sure how it works as in the UK we do not pay for any type of health care but birth I hear can be pricey in the US, you don't even want to think about if complications arise.

I don't think there is ever a right time. You will never be financially stable. There will always be ups and downs.

The main question...are YOU ready? Emotionally and mentally. That is the important part. If you wanna have another one, go for it.

No time like the present!

You have to think about what if that child is born early and needs to be in the NICU. You have to think about what if the baby is high risk. What if you have to quit your job because of complications.

I do have health insurance, but adding pregnancy would cost us an additional 400 a month, which doesnt even cover everything.

My hospital birth with my 2nd before insurance was over $10000. Add in my OB charge at $5000, Newborn screening at $500, epidural at $3000. All before insurance I would pay $18500+. I owe around $2000 for all of it after insurance. So yes it is expensive.

However there is never a right time to have a baby. You will find a way to make it work if it is something you want.

I always say there's never a perfect time. That's why regardless of how things are going, I'm TTC next year after my daughter's second birthday. I don't want too big of an age gap.

These are really good points that not everyone thinks about.
