Daughter just diagnosed with autism/Looking for a website

posted 7th Dec
My daughter was recently diagnosed with Autism.. Anyone know of a good website that has pics of words that can be printed out? EX: A pic of a kid sleeping in a bed, with the words "go to bed". or A pic of a book, with the words "book"?... kinda get what I'm saying? .. I'm not sure how to describe what I'm looking for.

Look up communication passport.
It's basically a book full of useful words or sentences with pictures. It's really useful, we made some for one of our stroke patients who had lost the ability to speak. You can just point and say, or they can point to something for you.

ETA: it also has useful stuff about your child's like/dislikes/details if they out at daycare etc. and you can add your own pages with pictures and words.

Is she getting services? Our speech therapist made us a picture schedule. They have programs that print them out. Otherwise just google the chipset you want and do it that way. But if you use the program from the therapists they are pretty similar to what they use all through school. So I would be more consistent.

Yea, she's getting services. She has a speech therapist, developmental specialist and sees a sign language teacher.. but this program only last till she turns 3,, which is next month. And her Developmental specialist told me to find the pics and print them out.

Have u asked the speech therapist? When she turns 3 is she goin to go to a special Ed preschool program? They should do the pics there. That's usually part of their program.

Yes do ask them. When I worked in an inclusion classroom they used them constantly. It's much better to use the standard system pics because it's more consistent throughout school for as long as they need them. Te one our speech therapist made for one of our kids was a strip with the schedule we could set up each day and make hanged to it if necessary. It was Velcro. Then there AA AA strip of Velcro on the back and when we finished an activity she can move it to the back where's it's out of sight. Sometimes that's a food strategy because some children with autism can't handle seein skmething that has already been done. So it helps to just remove it Completely.

If she has a speech delay it can also be used for giving her choices of foods, or having her tell you what she wants. Like you can out the choices on the strip and let her choose te one she wants.

This sounds terrible, but Youtube has amazing learning videos, and you can make your own list to be replayed (repetitive is good). My son learned his ABCs in 2 days by this since he wouldnt tolerate anyone showing him or reading anything to him.
