Milk Allergy/Skin Sensitivity

posted 7th Dec
So, long story short, DS breaks out with a rash around his mouth when he eats anything that has milk or dairy or wherever the milk touches. (At 4 months a couple drops of 2% milk landed on his arm and he broke out there) So, at his 4 month check-up I mentioned this to the doctor and he said that it sounded like a skin sensitivity. He didn't seem overly concerned and said he would probably grow out of it. Well, DS is almost 9 months and he still breaks out. I'm going to be bringing it up again because we have a new pediatrician at our 9 month check-up next week. (DH is military so we see on-base doctors) Should I request to see an allergy specialist? I just am thinking ahead to when he turns a year and is weaned from breastmilk to whole milk. Anyone have any experience with this? Thanks! (=
**Also, the rash doesn't seem to hurt him either**

soy milk is probably what they will want you to try him on....

there are lots of milk alternatives.. lactaid is our go to after trying many different types. (my 3 year old is intolerant I dunno about my 10 month old because he's a boobie baby)

my son has milk allergies.. as well as skin sensitivity. eventually we are taking him to a dermatologist but I will refuse the skin prick test unless he starts having life threatening reactions. I don't want to put him through that. I just live with the sensitivity. I know most of his allergens already.

ETA I get the lactaid with the added calcium.. alot of the milk alternatives actually have more of the omega 3s than regular milk

I thought that too or even almond milk, but everything I've read online says that those are not very high in fat like whole milk. Does that make a difference?

Not really as long as he has a healthy diet.

I completely agree with the skin prick. Unless it is life-threatening we won't either. Is that the only option for testing allergies? The rash doesn't bother him but we still avoid foods with milk or dairy. DH gave him a cheese puff the other day w/o thinking and his mouth broke out.

What milk alternative did you start off with when weaning your child?

Oh okay. This is all so new to me. All of my nieces and nephews were formula fed and then transitioned to whole milk at a year. I'm really the first to fully breastfeed. Any help or advice about transitioning would be great!

honestly, they wean when ready..

I gradually took feedings away and didn't really try to wean fully until he started drinking milk. We were down to two feedings a day for over a year lol so I'm not that great on advice. I nursed throughout my pregnancy and weaned once my youngest was born.
