anyone else had a child go from breast to expressed bottles?

posted 7th Dec
I just got out of the hospital for mastitis. I was in there from Saturday night to Tuesday morning.. During the first day in DS got bottles with expressed breastmilk because I was so under the weather because they couldn't control my fever and blood pressure. The second day in I tried breast feeding again and DS would latch for a min but then would fight staying latched. After minutes of trying we would end up giving a bottle because we wanted him to eat. Since then everytime I try it ends up the same.

I feel horrible that now he is feed bottles with expressed milk. I know he is still getting breastmilk so its good but I guess its the fact that I can no longer feed him off breast.

Has anyone else had this happen?

Contact a Lactation Consultant or a La Leche League Leader!!! Baby is better at expressing milk than the pump is, which puts you at higher risk for a recurrance of mastitis. You can get baby back to the breast

I talked to one everyday at the hospital and they said that he should go back. But I've tried so many time at home that I'm to the point of crying because he doesn't latch. In a way I'm fine with expressing and feeding bottles but right before I got admitted he was doing great and it was good because the cracks were healing. Just feel like I'm down on must luck.

I tried to introduce a bottle of express milk to give me a break and DS started preferig the bottle and getting fussy at the breast. I was told its nipple confusion because babies prefere bottle teats as they can get fast milk straight away and don't have to work for it, which is why they get fussy at the breast because they want it right away. I had to cut out bottles completely and work on getting DS latched again. It took a few days for him to stop fussing and get it right everytime. Just persevere getting him back on the breast and contact an LC.

I actually went back and forth breastfeeding and giving them bottles of breastmilk, as long as babys eating and gaining weight, dosnt matter how they are fed...

I actually pumped exclusively from birth to 6 months with my last baby, then when supply started going down, I breastfed him from 6 months till he lost interest about 11 months.

I expressed and bottle fed my twins the milk after about 5 weeks of horrific breastfeeding experiences! It changed my life! I was actually able to enjoy my time feeding the girls and they were actually getting enough milk and were happier! I did this until they were 5.5 months old. It's a bit more work but I don't regret it for a minute. It was just what worked for us! Don't feel guilty for doing whatever you have to. I was glad I could still give them breastmilk anyway I could (not that I judge formula moms either!). You just do the best you can for your baby.

While I was in the ER he got hungry and my mother in law tried giving him the formula that they have at the hospital but he refused it. So while I was in there I tried breast feeding him and it worked for the most parr. Then when they were transporting me and the first night in the hospital I was able to pump but I didn't have the energy to feed him. I'm glad that he is still getting breast milk and hopefully I can continue to produce, I know my production is coming back. I loves breast feeding but like you guys said, I gotta do what best for baby.

have you thought about trying a nipple shield? It will feel similar to the bottle for the baby and you will still be able to feed at the breast.

This is pretty much what you have to do. It may feel like you're "starving" your baby but if you can get him to stay latched for a minute or 2 he will be getting something. How old is he? If he's over 4 months you can feed him the breastmilk by spoon so he'll be getting it but without a bottle.

I didn't like it at 1st, that's why I exclusively pumped, but when I tried bf my youngest when I couldn't get much from pumping, I enjoyed it, I was sad when he didn't want to bf anymore...

Btw, I had mastitis when I had my 1st baby, that was seriously worse than contractions   I hope ur feeling better...

I am currently doing breast and expressed bottles. My baby girl does fine with both but it takes her a little bit to get used to the breast after taking a bottle because she has to work a little bit harder. She is only 11 days old and I have been doing this since we came home on the 29th.

It sounds like your gonna have to do one or the other. Some babies naturally switch between breast and bottle with no problems, others get fussy.
DS was getting fussy at the breast when I introduced a bottle of expressed milk so I had to make a decision. For me I chose breast and we had to persevere for a few days for him to not be fussy and latch correctly every single time.
If you want him on the breast you're gonna have to persevere too, he won't starve, he's just getting crabby because he can't get it fast and straight away like from a bottle, just stick with it and he'll learn. If you want to do bottle make sure you pump whenever he feeds to keep your supply up. You'll wanna get out exactly what he eats from a bottle so you can keep up with his needs.
