It worked for us. DS had a bad latch and I didn't know it. I supplemented the first 3 days until my 5 day PP appointment and then they taught me how to latch him properly. Never used any formula after that and he breastfed for 15 months. I wish I didn't have to give formula, but it was a life saver for us in the short time after we did. He never had a drop of formula after that day 3 we supplemented.

Lactation consultant came today and we talked about it. She said i did the right thing by giving him the formula. Especially since he wasn't having the proper amount of wet diapers and hadnt pooped in 24hours. He didnt poop the last day we were at the hospital or when he got home. He finally had a dirty diaper the next morning. She said it was probably from the formula' helping him get food and cleaning him out.

Also his, whatever its called that they test for jaundice in his blood was a little high when they tested at the hospital, it was a 10. She said that could be a reason why he isnt latching and eating and why he gets so tired so when he does latch he will just go to sleep and not eat. Which was/is a major problem. He'll latch but then not eat, he'll just take a few sucks then try to go to sleep. Since the number was slightly high before and because he was kind of yellow looking, she took some blood. I got a call later saying it was high, 17, and to go to the hospital and start light therapy.

So here i am in the NICU with my son doing light therapy. They are having him eat every three hours, 15min breastmilk then 15min formula. To make sure he is getting food and nutrients to get rid of the jaundice. They said cause of this, it is most likely why he has not been latching and why he may latch but then wont eat and why he tries to fall asleep instead of eating, even though he is latched on.

You did the right thing. I know a lot of women are militant about breastfeeding only and not giving formula, but sometimes it's just not possible to do that. Especially with a baby who is jaundiced and wants to sleep all the time. I had a baby end up back in the hospital at 5 days old because he was lethargic, his mouth was dry, and he was getting increasingly yellow. He had "brick dust" in his diaper (urate crystals from dehydration). He was nursing around the clock...I never had more than a ten minute break in between. Colostrum wasn't enough. My milk came in, but he wasn't getting it even though he was latched properly. I had the same issue with each of my kids and they all ended up on formula because my boobs just don't "give". Not even with pumping.

It boils down to doing what's best for your baby at the moment. I would rather feed my baby formula than let him or her starve because "breast is best".

Might be colic?

she didnt disclose all those other issues or my response would have been different
