re: Santa equals LYING to your children?? D&D

Quoting Amelia [14 Weeks]:" And thank goodness for that. It would be a lot harder to celebrate Christmas as an agnostic if it had to be all about religion or based on something "real."  "

We don't do any Christmas celebrations. My parents will buy DD a toy, but that's it and she will get it for Gita Jayanti on the 23rd. I don't see why, if you are not Christian, you need to celebrate Christmas. I see why people do, I just don't see the need to do it myself.

Exactly. You don't do it because you have to. You do it because you want to.

We don't do it at all. No Santa, no stockings, lights, trees, carols.

yeah, me too...

all of what you said is me.

that said, max currently believes in santa, but i suspect he's going to figure it out this year.

why does he believe? b/c santa came to his school last year (the teacher's husband).

so i just found out he actually believes in santa a few days ago -- b/c of what happened last year at xmas time.

i suspect this year he'll be too sharp for it, b/c his teacher's husband has a remarkably high voice that's hard to mistake for anything.

I wasn't referring to you specifically.

I do believe that Santa equals lying to your children. I always told the truth to my children and they are happy to know the truth. My oldest who is in second grade know that most of his friends believe in Santa so I told him to hush about it and it makes him feel so special

I know people personally who believed in Santa for a long time and when they found out it was all a lie, they were really mad at their parents.

Technically Jesus and other such religions could be seen as a lie, too. Nobody knows for sure who's real and who's not. So why don't people have a problem with lying to their kids in that sense, when they are filling them with religion?

We aren't religious but do a variation of Christmas and other holidays, I guess you could say... To us these holidays have always just about family and friends, teaching kindness, generosity etc

This was said already and it's not a lie because the ppl who teach their children about Jesus really believe in him. So no that's not considered a lie.

There are 14 major Hindu holidays I celebrate with DD. I don't have the time or will power to add Christmas.

I think it's a lie. I mean some fat pervy dude doesn't really slide down our airducts and leave my kids presents. No, we don't do Santa. It's never been a part of our Christmas traditions, I'm not about to add him in now. I think it's a creepy thing to tell your kids, honestly. Especially when we teach them not to take gifts or talk to strangers, we're going to teach them that someone breaks into our house, steals our food, and leaves cheap chinese made crap for them for "being good"? Yeah, I don't think so.

It's a fairytale, it's using your imagination. Telling make-believe stories happens every day in this house. Heck I'm sure my kids believe that dinosaurs are still alive and brush their teeth before bed, that fairies sprinkle pixie dust on people to help them fly and yes, that Santa brings a gift to all the good little boys and girls on Christmas eve. Children enjoy all things magical.

It may be a lie, but there are sometimes in life where it's okay to lie. I mean personally I'm not one to hurt others by saying 100% truth. For example I won't say that a dress a friend has already bought and makes her feel sexy makes her butt look big, or that her baby looks like an alien just to make sure I am always honest.

I also do not tell my nephews/nieces that no Santa is not real, instead I stand in the Santa line with their smiling excited faces. If our children decide to believe in Santa then that is fine. Then again, I also plan on teaching our kids that small white lies are okay in certain situations.

Because Jesus isn't a lie.
