Do you know that Santa IS NOT REAL? Do you still tell your children that HE IS? Contradictory to what you might think, that is a bold faced lie. You are looking into your child's eyes and lying to them and it's still a lie if it makes you feel good.

Either way the name came about it still resonated from the story of St nick and we only celebrate it on the 25th because of Jesus's birth.

It still if you look back is based on a true person. Just us as a society has made it out to be elves and the North Pole and so on.

Did you not read what I posted? It's another pagan tradition stolen from the Norse. It's an Odin story. Saint Nicholas raised people from the dead and gave a bag of gold to a father to be able to afford a dowry so his daughters didn't have to become prostitutes. He also beheaded heretics.

The Santa Claus story was invented by a department store. The elves, North Pole, Rudolph, etc were made up by a marketing designer for Montgomery Wards Department Store.

And the Santa that we know today, with the large belly and red suit is based on a character created by the Coca-Cola Company.

Believing in magic is silly as magic (at least not the smurf that makes reindeer fly...) is not real. And having an imagination is fine, but when you "imagine" smurf it's with the understanding that it's "imaginary", hence the word "imagination". When my kids talk about fairies and unicorns, they know those things aren't real. Is it fun to think about? Sure. But they know it's not real.

Same with Santa. Is it fun to "pretend" some fat guys breaks into your house and leaves you a smurf ton of toys once a year? Yeah, but in the end, I think kids should understand that's not real, and not because it'll "break their heart" later in life, but just the principle of not teaching your children smurf that doesn't exist.

REALLY and all this time I have been thinking he was real.

Yes I know he isnt real but I still like having my children believe in something that isn't real. I STILL DON'T THINK IM LIEING!!!!! But if you think your lieing that is your deal not mine. Children have been believing in Santa for a very long time and guess what know one thinks differently of their parents because of it. When you find out that he isn't real you are old enough to understand the differences and why your parents did what they do. Fantasies are ok to have I think kids deserve to have that. It is fun for them. But be a kill joy for your children.

Just to play Devil's Advocate... how is that NOT lying? I mean, if you KNOW Santa isn't real, yet you tell your children he is, then, based on the definition of "lying", you're lying. I mean, that's obvious.

It's certainly a lie. Whether or not you think it's a "lie" that's worth telling is a different story, but it's definitely a lie.

When you know something is false and you tell someone it is truth, that is the classical definition of a lie. It's okay...you lie to your children for "a good reason". Don't feel bad about it.

Merriam Webster says a lie is "an intentionally false statement". Are you telling your children and intentionally false statement? Yes, you are.

Oh, and DD was the one that told me that Santa isn't real. They teach logic in her school and one of their discussions was over Santa and if he was logical. She's in Kindergarten.

See, THIS is how I want my kids to think. I'd be way more proud of my logical thinker than if my kid just believed whatever someone told him.
