Disciplining a 12 month old

posted 6th Dec
How do you discipline a 12 month old? DD has been acting up a lot lately. When we're playing she will reach out like she wants a hug, then when I go in for a hug she will aggressively scratch my face. I will tell her "no no" in a stern voice but that only makes her more mad and she'll fall to the ground or try to bite me. It's slowly getting out of hand. I've tried putting her in her crib for short bits but that really doesn't seem to be working, and I don't believe in spanking. What can I do?

Remove yourself away from her. She'll get the hint if you just walk away. We use the saying "I don't give you owies so please don't give me owies. BLANK hurt Mommy."

We began one minute time outs at about 18months.

Redirect. Ignore the bad behavior. Let her throw her tantrum, and when she's calm, get to her level and talk to her. Eventually, she WILL understand and she will learn not to. She wants attention, so don't provide attention to bad behavior. Keep telling her no before you redirect her.

We did that for DD, and it DOES work.

When she does it grab her hands and say no. Let go if she does it again do it again. If she throws herself to the ground or if you have to set her on the ground say no and walk away. Tell her that hurts Mommy. Works for my daughter.

Are you stern when you say no? SO tells me I'm not stern enough and that's why she doesn't listen to me, I'm just such a softie it breaks my heart to yell at her.

Oh yeah. First time it happens, she gets a nice no. After that? We use the harsher tone. It's all that works, and she knows the difference between our play and nice voice and the 'you are SO busted and in trouble' voice.

She is 12 months, you don't need to yell at her.

When my oldest would hit I would take her hands and make her 'pet' my arm or face, or wherever she would hit me and I would say, "We have nice hands, niiiice hands." Then I'd pet her back saying it again. Lol

My daughter does the EXACT same stuff, she's 13 months. I tell her "NO" and that you're not supposed to hit, scratch, bite... She also throws tantrums and i ignore the tantrum,,, but sometimes it is hard to discipline her without laughing because she is so cute :/ I dont think im nearly as stern as i should be   it's hard...

There's a difference between yelling and saying something with a harsher, firm tone of voice. Sometimes, you have to be firm.

You have to be stern or she will never know Mommies upset voice versus your happy voice. My daughter actually puts herself in time out if she knows she upset me.

Okay? I responded to her not wanting to yell at her baby... I reassured her that she didn't need to...
........ I know the difference between yelling and talking... lol
Thanks for the pep talk I guess.

Well I didn't mean scream at her. lol Yeah I've tried the petting thing and I say "Oh you're so nice" as I'm having her pet me. But the minute I let go of her hand she starts slapping me.

Lol I have the same problem. I start laughing at her and then she thinks the whole thing is a game. I guess I just need to man up!
