Potty Training Almost 3 Year Old Boy

posted 6th Dec
My son will be 3 at the end of March. He is delayed in his communication skills (says MAYBE 5 words) A few months ago we tried potty training a bit, just to see how he'd react. I did the whole sitting him down every half hour and had him in underwear so he could feel the wetness. Never went. Well, he did... Just not in the potty. I had him sitting there for 5-10 minutes, didn't go. So he got up, I pulled his underwear up, he walked over to the fridge and back (we were doing this in the kitchen. There was linoleum in there.) and pissed right on the floor... Less than 30 seconds after sitting on the potty. He just doesn't. Get. It. And the wetness doesn't bother him at all... I backed off again after almost a week. I was ready to pull my hair out, and Ian just stood there mocking me like "HA! You have to clean up my puddle, again". I know he's delayed and that may be playing a factor in it... But he's an extremely smart kid. He USUALLY understands what we're saying to him, he knows what sounds most animals make, he knows the difference between a car vs a train, those kinda things. He just doesn't speak and is very temperamental. Is there anything I can do to help him understand? He already walks in the bathroom whenever someone is in there, doesn't matter who it is, he'll walk in, sit on his potty chair directly across from the big potty and watch you pee (or when his Dad is in there, he'll go in and stand next to Drew and watch him pee). A little unsettling, but that's besides the point. He's curious and learning. We aren't shy in our household. I just need some advice on how to approach this and maybe make it a bit easier for him to transition.

Honestly sounds like he isn't ready, also I'm sure him peeing on floor was not on purpose to get you upset. I would hold off until he is ready..

this is off topic but does he get birth to three? My son is two and also has a delay in speech. He speaks about 12 words and the program helps alor. I am also trying to potty train and its really hard bc of his delayed speech. I am just waiting for him to be ready bc you can not force him to if hes not ready. I bought 3day potty training and its very helpful.

He's been in speech therapy since he was 15 months old (his pedi recommended it. This was also when he was delayed in more than just the speech/communication areas) and he has a lady from the school come to our house once a week to work with him. The hospital that he goes to speech at actually sent us a letter in the mail the other day "reminding" us that if there isn't any steady improvement in Ian's speech, that they'll have to drop him. =[
