This. It always bugs me a little when people would start sharing weird stories about preemies. Like, my step-dad was talking about his aunt who had a baby like 40 years ago, and the baby was less then 3 lbs and like 3 or 4 months early and she took the baby right home and they were fine!! He was convinced that my daughter had no issues because this other phantom baby from 40 years ago was fine.

Or someone has a friends sisters cousins who had a 21 weeker who was just fine! They don't have details, but ya know, they just shook it off and were totally okay.

I'm always like. . . .

. . .. riiiiight. . . . .

The youngest preemie to survive is Amillia Taylor born at 21 weeks 6 days. Her mom had to lie and tell them to tell them that they were 24 weeks. She had IVF. She weighed less than 10 oz and nine and a half inches long. She came home 11 days before her due date.

Yeah. My daughter went down to 2 lbs. born at 2 lbs 10 oz. She came home at 5 lbs 12 oz. I can't imagine having a baby so small come home

I don't think this should be a factor, but I do think that dr's try more extreme measures when the mom has other factors going on .. like IVF or previous non-viable deliveries. I mean for me, there was a line they wouldn't cross because they didn't want to mess with my long term fertility or my life. I mean i was young, otherwise healthy, and there was no reason I couldn't move on and have other babies. I'm not saying I like that reasoning, but if i look at it from their perspective, i get it.

I didn't mean you. I was saying people who always know someone who knew someone and have NO facts about the case at all.

Well really, I mean I'm sure he has that story off somewhere, but I know that when my grandmother delivered her preemies 50-60 years ago, they just sent her home with them. One wAs apparently 26 weeks gestation, went home with her a week after delivery when she went home, he died 27 hours after getting home. He weighed 1lb 14oz. And was 12 1/2 inches long.
My uncle, her other preemie, was born at 31 weeks gestation and went home with her from the hospital weighing only 2lbs 15oz with the expectation that he would not make it either, and he is a healthy 58 year old man now. she said when she was having babies, that's what they did, their wasn't a whole lot of intervention they COULD offer at that time so they preferred to let live born babies go with their families even if they had no chance at survival.
She also had three miscarriages at 12 weeks, 15 weeks, and 18 weeks, and two still births at 22weeks and 35 weeks and four other surviving children born fully term. Poor woman.

Well I didn't believe MIL until she showed me the records. I think when she was born she was closer to 23 weeks. I wanna say 22w6d.

My 38 weeker failed her carseat test! She was 4lb 13oz when she came home after being born at 5lb 3oz. She was in a carbed for a month, they are weird. Lol but she still came home 2 days after she was born

Oh that sucks! I was SO afraid mine would fail. But then they said that since she was on o2 and an apnea monitor they weren't really worried about it, haha.
