Even then, no. A 26 weeker is a micro-preemie and would most likely be in the NICU for months on a vent.

It isn't medically possible for a 22 weeker to be breathing on its own.

This. That's the part to me that's like. . . no. Okay, lets pretend for a moment that a 22 weeker did survive, and was born breathing on it's own. Fine. But there are SO MANY more systems that need to be up and working then just the lungs. You deal with ROP, brain bleeds, having the ability to actually suck in order to feed. Heart problems like PDA's. Heck, my daughter was having some of her food through a tube until around 35 weeks or so. There is NO WAY a 26 weeker would be so totally okay it could be sent home. It would be like, 3lbs or less.

The problem with that is that it can cause major life long issues. At most, I've only heard of someone being given the steriod shots (each one is actually 2 shots given 24 hours apart) 3 times. Most commonly though, they like to give the first set and booster right before labor if they stay prego long enough.

Yeah I'm sure it's possible that hospitals save babies at that gestational age. Around here they don't "save" them until 24 weeks.

For both of my girls they didn't start until 24 weeks with the steroids

That's just what MIL told me. This was also 25 years ago. Lol. SIL has no medical issues at all but I think she was probably a rare occurence.

Yeah, there would be so many issues. I've never heard of a 22 weeker surviving. Ever. Maybe one day we'll have the technology, but not now.

Right, even if you entertain the idea, you'd be dealing with seizures, blindness, bilirubin levels, maintaining body heat, passing a car seat test, bein able to suck and feed, etc. the list goes on and on.

I follow a lady on Facebook that her baby was in 'NICU for two months she was Born at 26 weeks. She came home at 3 lb 6 oz or something. I was always told my daughter had to be at least 4 and a half pounds before coming home. But it is different I guess at different places.

I still think the girl OP is talking about is lying

I *THINK* I've read that the earliest was 22 weeks and something. Not 100% sure, but maybe. But with the variables, maybe that 22 weeker was really a little further along, you know?

Gosh, just thinking about what we went through at 27 weeks. SO MANY u/s of her brain to check for bleeds. Sucking food back out of her stomach to see how much she'd actually eaten. The blood pressure monitors, the pulse ox. All the meds that had to be given and altered. Checking blood sugar multiple times a day. That this was all on a baby born AFTER this other baby supposedly went home.

Nope. I've see too much of the NICU to even come close to believing that, and I'm a pretty trusting person, lol

Her due date must have been way off. 22 weekers don't survive now and they certainly didn't 25 years ago. My husband was born 10 weeks early in 87 and even his chances were slim

Yeah. With a carseat bed some places will let babies go home sooner if they pass all their tests. Mine was over 6lbs when she came home. She got her chub on. haha. I can't imagine bringing home a baby so small. Gosh, just holding my daughter when she was about 2.5lbs was crazy (when she was at her lowest weight).

The only premature baby I have heard of coming home was because they were certain she was going to die so they let her go early to be at home. She was addicted to crack, blind, paralyzed. She ended up living and was developmentally fine except being small and a little weaker than other kids. But really you never k is she had all that.

They gave her a 5% chance to survive. And she only weighed 15 ounces. So I don't think it was too far off.
