I'd say she's lying.

My friend just told me about our local nicu saving her friends 22 Weeker awhile back. They probably try but with no guarantee obviously.

Quoting Mrs.O!:" and at 22 weeks aren't their lungs JUST beginning to develop?..I mean, how can that baby be breathing on its own?"

Most lungs don't fully inflate until 24 weeks or later. Until then, the lungs can't expand and there's no way to keep a baby alive if they can't breathe oxygen. That's one of the big reasons babies born before 24 weeks don't have a very good outcome.

Yeah, no. She must be confused.

Some hospitals will try to save 22 weekers, but it's ROUGH. I'm talking well after their due date in the NICU. My Lo was a 27 weeker and she was intubated for a long time and didn't come home until around 37 weeks I think. No way would they let a 26 weeker (gestational age) go home. Not a chance. They would JUST be started to be able to feed probably, and they'd be less then 3lbs. My 27 weeker was big at 2lbs 15oz, and they lose weight after they're born.

I'm calling BS. She's either lying or confused.

Mine was born at 34 weeks and was breathing on his own, never needed O2. They were surprised as smurf, Im pretty ok with calling bullsmurf. I was 21 weeks almost 22 weeks with my son when I went into labor with him and they basically told me he wouldnt make it if we didnt stop it. Thankfully they did. Someone who makes that up is just a horrible smurfing person.

yeah its highly unlikely that a 22 weeker would even survive...avg weight is 15 oz and only 11 inches long.

Yeah all pregnancies are diff but a baby's development in utero isn't THAT different.

She's insane. A 22 weeker will not breathe on it's own. If a 22 weeker were to survive, it would be in NICU for months upon months. However, my mom has been a NICU nurse for 15 years and 23 weeks is the earliest she has seen survive. They're just not equipped at 22 weeks. Sad, but true.

The only way I can see even the lungs being viable enough to be worth it is if they had been giving her weekly steroids like they had to do to MIL when she was pregnant with SIL.
