LO in sunlight

posted 6th Dec
Okay, so this might sound stupid, but is it okay to leave LO in the sunlight? He was born Sunday and his bilirubin levels were almost at 9 when we were discharged late Monday. We were told keeping him in sunlight would help but this is the first sun we've seen since then.
He's been chilling in his diaper for maybe 15 minutes now on the bed in the sun. But I'm wondering how long to leave him there. I don't know if there's such a thing as too much sun right now.

When my son came home they told me that too, I let him nap for a few hours in the sun by a window.

If bilirubin gets to high they will hospitalize the baby and put it under UV lights in the hospital. (Or sometimes send you home with bili lights to do it at home) Why do that when you can use natural sunlight at home?

The sun can be very beneficial for people.

OP, just give him breaks so he doesn't get too heated.

Have you ever heard of jaundice? It's yellowing of the skin and eyes. If babies bili levels are high, they start getting jaundice. Jaundice leads to organ failure. Either kidneys or liver, I can't remember which one.

OP: If his level was a little elevated, I'd keep him in sunlight, just make sure he doesn't get too hot. At his next well baby, they should check again and you will know if you are in the clear to stop.

my little girl had a 12.? level when we left the hospital and they told us to lay her in the sun as much as we could for the first week and we did just that. we let her nap there for all her naps and when we went to her appt a week later she was fine. worked great for us

So this happened when we brought our son home too he was discharged with slightly high levels and they had us bring him back to the hospital next day to check him they told me to feed as much as possible I was breast feeding and they said that the "sunlight" doesn't really help ( i think different) so we put him in a diaper and laid him in the cozy sleeper thing I have on the couch and he laid in the sunlight for a few hours and we went back to the hospital they checked him and his levels were perfect!

Our doctor said that too with our first doctor her levels were high but not high enough to need the uv bed...we let her nap on the sun and in 3 days she was back to normal levels! As Long as its through the window and not direct sun it cannot harm...just make sure LO doesn't get too warm!

Thanks, ladies! He laid there for maybe two hours and then the sun disappeared.   Hopefully we'll have more luck with it tomorrow.
