What would be Cheaper?!

SO and I moved to NC in october, We both hate it here, We are both currently working. and saving up to go home. We do not currently have a vehical here, We left my car back home in new york. What would be the cheapest way to get back, We were thinking avis for a rent a car. We have two dogs, And we have no idea how to possibly do this, PLus we have to bring all of our belongings home with us. Should we ship the light stuff, and rent a small car good on gas and just bring the dogs and heavy stuff in the car, OR should we rent a mini van, Which will cost us about 400, not including gas, But wont have to pay for anytning to be shipped. Please, give me your opinions!

Depending on the items, shipping may work out better. The least number of boxes possible though. You would have to call and ask, but stores like the UPS store go by both measurements and weight.
