NICU mom: i need dr's "order" in order to breastfeed!!!

posted 6th Dec
doesn't make sense to me. my son was a preemie born at 27 weeks now 34 weeks. and drinking milk fine. I asked his nurse if i could try to breast feed him...mind you ive been patient this WHOLE entire time...and the nurse tells me "i dont see any orders in the computer..you cant breastfeed" WHO is she to tell me i can't breastfeed??? he has no digestive issues. hes on moniters!! what ...will i get arrested if i take him in a corner and breastfeed him?? she told me i need to wait until doctor gives the okay to breastfeed. so irritated. what do you all think? advice?

You listen to the nurse and wait until a doctor okays it.

They aren't there for smurfs and giggles. Pretty sure they deal with more preemie babies than you have.

I work in a hospital and you need an order for everything! Its stupid but its their way of covering their ass. Even to show you need a dr's ok.

Changing his diet can freak his body out. Unless he's been drinking your pumped milk this whole time. In that case, I don't see what the problem would be.

I would have a sit down with his Dr about it.

I met a mother who went through something similar when we were both in nicu. She said the same thing you are. They eventually let her daughter nurse for five minutes every 4 hours just like mine:

he never comes around....even when they do rounds in the morning. im there every freaking day at 6am. sometimess 530 to make sure i get there in time. and its always the drs under him. and when i try to page no answer. the nurse somehow gets in touch with the dr for me and it takes a week or so for him to get back to me.

I would think the reason they may not want you to is so that they can monitor how much the baby is getting.

WOW... I would park my ass in a recliner/chair and wait for him to come in.

I havent met my Daughters Dr in the NICU yet.. but the nurses are good at relaying messages for me

They can do that by weighing the baby's diapers.
