When I think traditional family I think of the past like the fifties housewife. May I ask what it means to you? I'm probably on a different wavelength lol.

When I hear "traditional gender roles" I think of a man being masculine, being the "head of the family", decision maker and the one bringing home the bacon; I picture the wife as being a SAHM/homemaker, who can have a say in something but the man makes the final decision.

I don't picture the emotional/verbal/physical abusive man and the doormat woman.

CLK, I picture what Rumpl wrote BUT, "the final say" is nearly always what the woman wants as the man understands he wont be happy without a happy, in-control woman.

LMAO

I think it was the mom in "my big fat greek wedding" that said it best. "The man is the head of the house... but the woman is the neck, and she can turn the head any way she wants to."

Yeah different wavelengths lol. Se I don't believe that is necessarily traditional as long as both agreed on it. To me that's a more modern family, because the woman does have a say.

Even "back in the day" women had a say except in some "crazy" families. And the crazies are always the ones we remember or are louder so heard more often.

Both my grandmothers were strong women who gave their opinions on things, of course they listened to their husbands and my grandfathers always had the last word in things and all that, though.

I just know women did have fewer rights back then, compared to now. I don't have any personal stories myself as I never met any of my grandmothers.

Women surely had less rights, no doubt. My grandmother pretty much said that in public, women were quiet and blah blah blah like in the movies or whatever, but at home, women really did run the household. They just let other people believe their husbands did.

You know the saying "behind every great man is a great woman?" I think that's where that saying came from. Women always let men take credit for everything.
