it is double knotted between each bead, so if the necklace were to break, only one bead would come off. They're small enough where I doubt an older infant could choke on one. You don't have to leave it on while they sleep, and with younger babies I wouldn't recommend it, but Abby is almost 1 and I'm comfortable with it.
