I'm being forced!

posted 5th Dec
So I work at a doctors office and my boss (the doctor) is making all of the employees get the flu shot because he is taking immunodepressant medications and needs to protect himself. I have never had the flu nor the flu shot and I told him Im not getting it especially now because Im pregnant. He basically told me that if I dont get it I will be terminated. WTH? I don't understand his reasoning because he is still going to be exposed by the SICK patients that come in. I've worked in Pediatrics and was exposed to the flu, MRSA, strep and worse and never got anything. Can he legally do this? I'm terrified of getting the flu shot. Help!
My midwife said its safe blah blah blah but how "SAFE" is it really?

That is a personal decision and unless you were contractually obligated to get it when you were employed, he can't terminate you for it. That is absolutely ridiculous.

Im pretty sure he cant legally make you do that, and really what is the point when he is still going to be exposed to way worse things

As for the legal aspect, I don't know. But it's perfectly safe to get while pregnant.

He can't terminate you because of that unless it is written in your job contract.

He can't fore you for that. BUT he can make up another reason and fire/let you go for that bs reason.
We dont' do flu shots either. they create super bugs, and it's only that strain.

Nope its no where in my work contract that during flu season I have to get the flu shot. I understand that "research" says its safe, but if mercury levels are such a concern during pregnancy, how can they say that a flu shot is safe when it contains mercury and who knows what else in it? I will definitely be contacting the EEOC on this one because if I have to take his smart ass to court, by all means I will. He brags about his great attorney all the time, we will see how good he is when the state of Illinois covers me!

Idk about your boss making you get them but my doctor actually wants all his pregnant patients to get it. I haven't and I'm not getting it and I work at a pre-k.

I'm in a tough situation because ultimately I NEED my job, but Im not willing to put my baby and myself at risk because he wants to be selfish and protect himself.

Yeah most OB's and Midwives are pushing patients to get it because the CDC says its very important. Keep in mind the CDC are the ones who make the vaccine too. Its so ridiculous!

I got the flu shot while 7 months pregnant. It is true that it cant protect you against ALL different strands but it can protect you against some. There is no harm in you getting it and if you are pregnant you just pass those antibodies to your baby which helps make his immune system stronger.

I don't see how he could fire you for that. But if he is on immunosuppresants I would care about him getting sick. I wouldn't want to risk him getting sick since his immune system is already weak..

Every time I go to an appointment, my midwife tries to force the flu shot on me >_>
It doesn't make sense that he'd want all his employees to get it, they inject you with a live virus, lol. My grandma gets it every year and every year, she's seek for at least 2 weeks. So useless.

Well, I don't think he's selfish for wanting to protect himself, but I understand where you're coming from, too. Just keep in mind, if he's taking immunosuppressant drugs his body can't fight off the flu like you and I. It can kill him.
