How common is jaundice?

posted 5th Dec
LO was born on Sunday and has a mild case of jaundice. When we were discharged his bilirubin levels were low enough so that they didn't do anything but high enough to tell me to mention it to his pedi.
We saw his pedi today and she said she wants us to come in on Monday for a weight check and to make sure the jaundice is going away. Is it normal for them to want to check again?
All she told me to do was make sure he eats every two hours because it passes in their urine and stool. There's no sun to put him in right now.
It just has me worried and paranoid. I feel really helpless because I can't actually do anything to get rid of it and I'm worried it will get worse and I won't realize it or something.

The same thing happened with my son. His levels were just enough to mention to his pedi. We had to go back to the hospital a few days later and they did a bilirubin test. We then had to go back to his pedi a few days later for a weight check and to make sure his levels were still going down.

It's pretty common and normal, but make sure your LO eats every 2 hours. DD had it and her levels at the highest got to 17.5 and i had to go pretty much every day for about 4 days to have her checked, then they let me go over the weekend before they wanted to see her again. As long and the levels don't go up they won't be worried.

It's common. My son had no jaundice really at first, but developed it later. They called his breastmilk jaundice (not breastfeeding jaundice). It stuck around for a while, but never got high enough to be dangerous. They checked his levels quite a bit.

My son was born 2 weeks ago with Jaundice. He left the hospital at a 10.9 and we had an in home nurse come 2 days later to take another bilirubin test and he went up to a 14.9. He was tested again the next day and thankfully it started going down, he was a 14.3. The nurse came back 3 days later to test him again and he was down to a 10.9 again. I was so scared as we were not really educated at the hospital before we left. Come to find out, it's pretty common. They kept telling me at the hospital they wanted to make sure he was getting enough breast milk so he could pass it in his stool. I had to supplement while breastfeeding with a feeding tube that went in the side of his mouth while he breastfed also. We did that for a few days until my milk came in. He's doing well now!

Thanks, ladies. DS never had it so this is new to me. And everything I've read said to just leave him in some sunlight but we never see the sun this time of year.

Quoting Mom2William&Michael:" LO was born on Sunday and has a mild case of jaundice. When we were discharged his bilirubin levels were ... [snip!] ... because I can't actually do anything to get rid of it and I'm worried it will get worse and I won't realize it or something."

its very common.
dd was born with a very high case. and was hospitalized with light for 7 days :/ it was nerve wrecking.. after she was finally discharged we went back every week for about a month to double check her levels. im sure everything will be ok they just want to make sure it doesnt return!! just keep him eating if you dont see the sun! if he starts to have yellow in his eyes or becomes very lethargic call the dr.

dd had it... pretty common but we had to go in once a day for the first 2 weeks of her life to check her weight and for the doctor to check her because i wasnt producing enough milk.... eventually they had me supplement then i tossed in that towel and just did formula because if i wasnt breastfeeding, i was pumping or syringe feeding... it left literally no time for sleep.

Both my kids had really high jaundice. My oldest was preemie and had to go under lights. My second was term and didn't have it that bad. I just nursed him as often as possible.
