Would anyone be interested in a thread on breastfeeding?

posted 5th Dec
Just wondering if a "preparing for baby" thread on breastfeeding would be helpful to anyone?

Yeah - I know about that one - but I thought maybe a thread here would be good to in order to prep for nursing, ask questions & post info regarding what to exxpect in early nursing & such to help mommas who are interested in nursing.

I would have loved it when I was pregnant! You have a lot of questions, it'll also be a useful place for mommas who have successfully breastfed to tell pregnant women what breastfeeding is really like. It can be really tough and I wish someone had told me about the cluster feedings, comfort nursing, growth spurts and latching techniques. I worried so much at first I wasn't producing enough but if someone had told me that I was gonna feel at times I couldn't do it I would have been a lot less stressed out when the time came.

That is what I was thinking. nealry every "problem" I had early on was a problem between my ears   & not understanding what I was supposed to expect. LOL

Exactly, you just think how hard can it be? All they do it suck and bam they're fed. But nope. You are paranoid you're doing it right, if they're latching properly etc etc.
DS also had tongue tie, which I knew nothing about when I was pregnant until the nurse (thank god for her) pointed it out in hospital. If she hadn't have been so vigilant and just damn clever it would have been the end of breastfeeding for us.

What are your oponions on just pumping rather than full on breast feeding ? Just wondering bc #1 my other 2 they werr unable to latch no matter how hard i tried even seeing a b.f . Nurse to "coach" me ...#22 even with pumping i didn't it for 2 weeks.and literally felt drained worn out and sick after stopping i felt fine... #3 i have a 4 and 3 year old that have never seen me b.f and I'm afraid theyll freak out if they happen to walk in or something like that :/ i really want to try when i deliver but I'm such a worry wart ..btw I'm 35 weeks sooo I'm pretty close just want some advice

They won't freak out they'll probably just be curious!! Explain to them that milk comes from your breasts and it has everything in it to feed your baby. It's good to teach kids that boobs are for breastfeeding, so many teenagers these days find it gross as they see boobs as sexual objects.

Try not to express feed too. Its a lot of hard work and you really need to be committed to build your supply, like pumping whenever they feed so you don't miss a feed. You might as well just feed them straight form the tap.

I don't have an "opinoin" perse on pumping exclusively. I know, like you said, it is a TON of work & often leads to low supply though & like you said "afte rI felt fine"...it is not a workable way to feed breastmilk for most moms, for a numner of reasons.

When you say your 1st two would not latch a little mor einfo would be helpful...

So if you can start with something like how soon after delivery did you attempt to nurse & what types of deliveries you had. Also - were the babies given anything (including a binkie) prior to trying to latch them - so formula, sugar water, etc?

Supplementing with bottles or anything but the nipple can seriously mess with latching. It's also recommended the first feed be given within an hour of birth too.
Its also good to remember while babies have the instinct to latch they may not have learnt the ability to do it every single time successfully. Its a steep learning curve for baby as well as momma.

Idk anf when they brought my kids back from changing and bathing they had binkies in they mouths! :/
