Is he behind??

posted 4th Dec
DS will be 3 in April. He has the basic "what's this?" "who's that?" "where did it go?" sentences down but when it comes to more complicated things like "I love you" (comes out "I you") or "I need to potty" (comes out "mommy potty" or just "potty"). I'm worried he is behind because another boy who is a month older than him has been able to carry on a conversation for almost a year now. Is DS behind? If so is there anything I can do besides just working with him? It also sounds like he has a lisp and he has trouble saying "th", r's, k's, and c's. Does he need speech therapy?

Do you stay home all day with him? If he stays with you all day that may contribute to the more delayed sentences.

Is he tongue-tied? That can contribute to the annunciation problems.

Try putting him in daycare/preschool if he isn't already so he can socialize with other kids his age. Also have his doctor check for tongue-tie if you are not aware of that problem already.

If he is in daycare and not tongue-tied then yes it may be worth getting checked out to see if there is a language delay.

No, I doubt he needs speech therapy. Most three year olds have lisps. I don't think he's "behind" but he's certainly not ahead. I really wouldn't worry right now. He's still very young.

DS does this. Instead of like saying "I want juice", he just says "juice".. Or if he wants to take a bath, it's just "bath". It's pretty much like that w/ everything. He's 3 also,BTW, and he is considered delayed in speech. He's seeing a speech therapist now for it.

Doesn't sound like it to me. My son was the same way, probably worse off. He didn't really say anything. Then just before three, like maybe a month before, his speech picked up dramatically. He turned 3 in October and I swear, he doesn't shut up now lol. His pedi always made sure he could understand what I was saying, point things out, and was listening well.

If you're concerned, talk to your pedi. But some kids just talk a little later. GL.

The only reason he's not in daycare is because we can't afford it and I know he doesn't have a tongue tie. A doctor checked his mouth before.

Yeah DS seems so understand what's going on and points to things and makes an attempt to say most of the things I say or things I ask him to say

Try finding other families with kids his age to have park days with to get him talking more, those are free  That is what I am going to start doing with DS who is 22 months.

There are none around here that I like lol. My mommy friends don't have kids around DS's age either...
