Home remedy for a cough?

I have a nasty cough....sometimes it's dry, sometimes not so much.
But it's starting to hurt my chest. I don't want to take OTC cough meds, and I can't go to the doctor, so I need a home remedy.....  

Anything?
I can do chamomile tea and honey...but it doesn't really seem like it helps much.

We always use tea w/ honey, or just a tablespoon of honey. We use organic raw honey, not sure if that makes any difference...but it is soothing!

Tea with honey and a splash of whiskey.

Steam up the bathroom so it's like a sauna.
