Metformin to get pregnant?

posted 4th Dec
When I was trying to get pregnant with DS in 2010 I got prescribed Metformin. It also helped my diabetes so that wasn't the only reason they prescribed them. A month after starting to take them I got pregnant (I started taking them Oct 2010 and got pregnant in November 2010 found out I was pregnant December 2010). I was prescribed them by my family doctor not a specialist in diabetes or fertility. DH and I have discussed TTCing in the near future and I wonder if I should ask to be put on Metformin again at my next appointment with my family doctor even though we don't plan on TTC for a bit, should I just see if I can get on it now instead of waiting until we TTC? It helped my blood sugars as well so it's not the only reason I want to be on it but I do believe it's what helped me get pregnant. Anyone have experience with Metformin and getting pregnant?

The only time I have ever been able to get pregnant naturally was the cycle after I started taking metformin. Can't say for sure that's what did it but it probably helped. I later lost that pregnancy but it was an egg issue, not the metformin.

Wow sounds like me, it seemed like as soon as I took metformin I got pregnant. I had been trying for a year and a half almost to get pregnant so when he prescribed it he told me he wasn't doing it just so I could get pregnant but he said that could be a wonderful side effect.

Totally off topic but did your doctor give you a hard time about getting pregnant?

You mentioned having diabetes, did your doctor strongly recommend you not get pregnant.

Nope, he actually said it was perfectly fine as long as I was taking care of myself. (That was my family doctor) I found a great OB who I worked with as well as several high risk OBGYN's and had constant monitoring and such. My pregnancy was rather uneventful till 30 weeks when they realized I had Acute Fatty Liver Syndrome of Pregnancy.

Just because you have diabetes doesn't mean you shouldn't get pregnant, you just have to be more careful than most about things you eat and be more vigilant about taking your meds right and checking your sugars.

A few medical personnel, including my doctor have mentioned me not having more children. The nurse who monitors me has even asked me if I was on birth control. Maybe it is because I am way over weight.

I would maybe discuss options with an OBGYN? Are you wanting to have more kids? Are your blood sugars under control?

Well I think I am done having kids but it just seems like the doctors are pushing my decision because of my health. I was just diagnosed in January and am currently taking Metformin and Novolin injections to help control my sugar levels, the rest is up to me.

Yep that's what I do. I take Novolin N & R. I'm not taking Metformin currently.

I got pregnant on metformin after it regulated my cycles. My cycles became regular after my son so I didn't go back on Metformin and I got pregnant without it. I miscarried at 9 weeks though, so now I'm wondering if it was a hormone issue. I was going to go on metformin for the next time I TTC but I changed my mind. I'm going to try again and hope the next one sticks.
