Blocked milk duct?
posted 4th Dec
If you have a blocked duct, will anything come out of that breast? My left breast is KILLING me, so much I can't even hold my son on that side. I don't feel any lump and have no fever, but it's like excruciating pain. I don't want to go in just to waste time and money, but if it's something serious, how exactly would I know?
TIA

My right boob got like that, i kept a warm water bottle(where it hurt) and just let DD nurse. A day or so later i was fine. There was milk coming, out just not much.

Try bfing on all fours like dangling your boob in his mouth, gravity helps the clog. Of it doesn't get better in a couple days you could end up with mastitis which usual gives you the chills/fever and red spot in boob...I've had both and both times they went away on their own

When I had a blocked duct I pumped until it passed. When it passed it looked like, I dunno, rotten milk or something...like the milk itself was fine, but there was stringy snotty looking stuff in with it, which I assume was the blockages considering how long & wide they were. I got like 12 oz. of milk that time, and dumped it all because I was a first time mom & thought something was wrong with the milk, & after that I always struggled with low milk supply. That's all I know. That and a friend of mine had blocked ducts & after it passed her milk supply dried up. I'm sure it's not like that for everyone though, so I hope you don't freak out from my experience & the one other my friend told me about.

Mine still sprayed pretty far when I squeezed it so I'm at a loss for what it may be. It's like a horrible internal bruise like someone punched it as hard a they could.

Yes. Milk will still come out even if you have a blocked duct. You have multiple ducts in each breast.
Generally pain is a good indicator but red patches and hot spots on the breast are also symptoms.
Try laying down in a very hot bath for ten minutes then nurse LO while you are on your hands and knees, the gravity will help.
Or... this will sound weird but if LO doesn't want to nurse your SO can suck the blockage out as well. You can pump but it'd take longer.
Good luck and don't let it get much worse or it can progress in mastitis.

My thing is I'm not even sure if it's blocked, he's still able to get plenty, it just hurts on the side really bad. So I have no idea what's going on really.

It's probably a clog, they hurt! Like a deep bruise

That's exactly what my right boob felt like, i had mastitis when DD was born so i knew it wasn't that. I first thought DH had grabbed my boob too hard and bruised it but that wasn't it. I just kept the water bottle on it for pretty much 12 hours, on and off at night and then some that next day and it started to feel better and about a day or 2 later the pain was gone. Everywhere i read said it was a clogged duct. I also nursed DD a ton on that side.

Thanks ladies! I'll put some heat on it and keep putting him on that side see how it goes

yeh it sounds like ablocked duct.. i had one when i was breastfeeding my little guy and it sucked! but i just instead of switching breasts after every feeding. i would nurse twice on the blocked booby and then switch. the more you burse.. or pump the blocked booby the better chance you have at opening the duct =)

I had the same thing! My gyno advised me to take a nice hot shower, pump until nothing came out (it hurt so bad, I had to grit my teeth when my LO nursed, so she advised that I do that instead!), and take 2 pain pills. I felt soo much better after that!!
