circumcision (should insurance cover it?)

posted 4th Dec
I have seen in some states where it is covered and in others it is not.
i personally dont believe in circumcision unless there is a medical reason and it should always be a last resort. but that is me. and i know others feel different then i do.. some even think that it shouldn't be done at all medical or not, And others think its should be done because that's what they wish to do with there child.
But all in all some insurance does not cover it and would like the person who is deciding to circumcise there child to pay out of pocket for it. and for those states who do that should they cover it or should they make the person wishing to do so pay out of pocket?

this did spark from another post.

I don't think it should be covered by insurance unless it is medically necessary.

I will have to look at our policy but I am pretty certain that our insurance feels it is a cosmetic procedure (unless there is a medical need) and will not cover it.

It's considered a cosmetic procedure, it shouldn't be covered by insurance.

Agreed! n Maine they will only cover it if it is done before you leave the hospital after you are discharged it comes out of your own pocket.

I think they should have to pay for it. You pay for other cosmetic procedures.
Over here it will be done for medical reasons on the NHS for free. Cosmetic or religious reasons you have to pay for a private doctor, if you can find one willing to do it as it isn't the 'done thing' here.

Like a nose job, insurance should only cover it if it's medically necessary, not aesthetically desired.

I think it should be covered.. it's a commonly practiced procedure that is second-nature to a lot of people now. it has been accepted by many as part of birth for a boy. honestly, until coming on BG I had never known many people to opt not to have it done.

IDK I guess since technically its considered a cosmetic procedure it would probably be best if all insurance companies stopped covering it unless medically necessary. But if thats the case they also need to cover procedures that are normally considered cosmetic that are ruled medical.

I hope that makes sense i'm seriously lacking coffee today.

No... Why should it? It's a cosmetic surgery.

Circumcision is mostly a cosmetic procedure, rarely is it medically necessary.

Insurance (medical card, etc) will not cover braces as well unless it's medically necessary because braces are purely "cosmetic" most of the time, why should circumcision be any different?
