posted 4th Dec
My midwife booked me into antenatal classes but they dont really interest me, do I have to go to them or is it by choice? X

Its a choice. You don't HAVE to do any of that. I never went to any classes at all.

You don't have to do anything. It's up to you.
I would LOVE to go to one of those, though. Being a first time mom I always have questions. I think it would be great to go to one of these and see other mom's with babies my kid's age, and to meet some mommy friends.

She can be mad all she wants. It's not like she's gonna go to your home and drag you out by the ear to the class. Parenting is not rocket science.

it is a choice thing, they're not compulsory but i highly recommend them. I was a bit skeptical, I though they were all about pain relief and breathing techniques but they're actually quite fun. It was nice to get together with other mums and the midwife and have a chat about everything, you could literally ask anything and chances were someone else want to know too but were too scared to ask.
They do different stuff each week, from preparing for a baby, some pain relief options, different types of births and where you can labour and who you can have there or who you want to care for you, what to buy for baby, first few weeks, safety for baby etc. etc. Also we talked about the embarrassing stuff like poop and postpartum bleeding.
Just try the first couple of sessions, if you don't like it you don't have to go anymore, a couple of mums that were on my course dropped out after the first session or two, nothing was said about it, it's normal.

I went on my own. there were about 10 women in my class and only 2 bought partners along for the first session. After that it was just us women.

My husband originally started going to my prenatal classes with me. He was the only partner there. He stopped coming with me because he was weirded out by all of the women talking about their vaginas and boobs lol.

Yea I guess that's why they stopped coming. It's really daunting and awkward at first but once the conversation started flowing it was really fun. I remember being really embarrassed to ask about pooping in labour but when I asked loads of the other mums said they'd been wondering the same!
Also a good place to vent away from your SO's with other women!

Oh yeah I LOVED my class! I wish we had an after-baby class too!
We got together once a couple weeks after everyone's babies were born, and it was great! Then I moved half-way across the country

Aw we have after classes here. There is a children center or two in most towns, they have smurf loads going on for mums, at least something every day, all free too. Messy play drop ins, under 5 clinics, bosum buddies for breastfeeding women, baby weigh in and check ups, weaning talks, dads drop in clinic, cloth nappy and baby wearing sessions, baby massage, little gems for mums with young babies, toddler groups, music sessions, math sessions for kids the list goes on......
