So, I went to lay down at about 10 AM on Saturday and I was pretty bummed because the contractions I had been having for the week prior had stopped. I woke up at noon to soaked underwear. I kind of thought that maybe I had peed myself. After two more pairs of underwear and a call to my OB, we headed for the hospital. I wanted to get there as soon as possible because I had tested positive for group strep B.
It was, of course, my water. I tried for the rest of the day to get the contractions going but they were spaced irregularly and hardly intense. Nothing worked so the next morning, Sunday, I started Picotin.
It was awful. The nurse raised it a lot faster than my midwife had said and it got to the point where I felt like I was going to black out. I made the decision to get the epidural and was glad that I did; the man who did it was wonderful and I hardly felt a thing. It was a far better experience than when I got it with DS.
Problems started then. My blood pressure dipped a little. It wasn't alarming to anyone but the one said nurse - including the midwife - but she pushed me onto my said and it caused my IV to come out of the vein and everything started building up in my arm. I'm a hard stick and it led to three different nurses stabbing me eight times, including the inside of my wrist. Finally, the same doctor who did my epidural came and got an IV and all was well again.
I progressed very quickly after that and my midwife came in at 3 PM exactly. I waited until I had a contraction and pushed. Michael was born at 3:03. He was 6 pounds 15.5 ounces and 20 1/5 inches of perfection.
We stayed in the hospital until 10 PM tonight when we were discharged. Being away from DS and being in the hospital bed made me very emotional, I guess, and a nurse asked the second pediatrician if she thought I could be discharged and the pediatrician said she saw no reason for me to stay. So even though it was late we came home and things have been smooth going since.
A very sleepy Michael
