Date Rape Ads D&D

Edmonton Police Department started a campain 2 years ago about date rape. These are new posters for it... How do you feel these? Do you believe that this will make a difference? D&D

They've got a bit of that "shock factor" but people seem to need that. I also like that they were bold enough to use two men in that last one!

Hopefully it does make a difference. I believe most people have that "It won't happen to me" complex. Hopefully these ads bring awareness and people realize that this can happen to ANYONE! Men, women, gay or straight.

I don't think they'll help.

If a guy is inclined to actually rape another person, he'll probably make assumptions for all of the situations here.

If they say they don't want it, they just have to try harder.

If they're drunk it's all in good fun.

Even if they change their mind, they owe them at that point because they said they would.

Not all rape is brutal, physical rape. I think strong coercion that's bad enough to leave feelings of shame, guilt, and emotional trauma is rape. Most people still don't consider it rape if a woman isn't absolutely screaming "No!" and fighting for her life, though. It's sad.

I think they should hand them on high school and college campuses to be honest. I like them. It seems like it should be common sense, but some people are just ignorant.

I know that feeling all too well  

I hope it makes a difference. I wish they had these ads circulating while I was in high school. I dated a couple guys who needed to see these.

the drunk one is my favorite. I've been in that position myself and I know it happens far more often than most people think.

I agree. It happens more often than people think with all parties sober, too.  

I think anything were the message is aimed at the attacker instead of the victim is a step in the right direction. We have had ads that focus on the attacker running here for quite a few years now, that focus on looking at their behaviour. Will they make a huge difference, well who knows but the education needs a massive turn around. There is far too much emphasise on educating women to not drink too much, be aware of your dress sense, don't act too inappropriate, don't lead a man on..... There needs to be even more emphasise on the behaviour of an attacker about what consent actually is. If someone is of the mentality that they will grab a stranger in the middle of the night and rape them at knife point then they are probably already fairly mentally unstable and unlikely simple ads and education will have much of an effect but there are unfortunately many "normal" men who think if someone is practically passed out it is ok to have "sex" with them or if they engage in one sexual act with them then they are entitled to everything, that attitude needs addressing.

I don't think it's intended to change already grown men. It's for boys.

Start teaching them young before rape justification is firmly entrenched.
