Christmas Tree D&D
posted 3rd Dec
I was discussing Christmas Trees with a few Christian friends tonight that said putting one up was against the Bible. What do ya'll think based on this verse?
Hear the word that the Lord speaks to you, O house of Israel. Thus says the Lord: “Learn not the way of the nations, nor be dismayed at the signs of the heavens because the nations are dismayed at them, for the customs of the peoples are vanity. A tree from the forest is cut down and worked with an axe by the hands of a craftsman. They decorate it with silver and gold; they fasten it with hammer and nails so that it cannot move. Their idols are like scarecrows in a cucumber field, and they cannot speak; they have to be carried, for they cannot walk. Do not be afraid of them, for they cannot do evil, neither is it in them to do good. Joshua 10: 1-25

We put up a fake Christmas tree and we're Christians.

That is what my DH said, and he made me read it. But we still got a tree.

It basically sounds like "Christmas trees are stupid"
But in other interpretations, it talks of the tree being chiseled first, or being made into an idol of wood.
The rest of that chapter talks about gold smiths.

The bible has to be interpreted according to context. That passage was written WAY before Christmas trees even became a tradition. I think it's about people using them to worship idols, not to celebrate Christmas.

I'm Christian and have a fake tree. Thing is, I don't use it as an "idol." I don't see it that way and never will

Sounds like the typical condemnation of the various pagan yule ceremonies involving decorating trees.
When that didn't work, they merely adapted them to fit their own mythology.

also, even if it WERE about Christmas trees, these laws were strictly for Jewish to stand apart from the pagans as God's people. In the new testament, it was determined that gentiles (Non-Jewish Christians_ did not need to adhere to these laws. So if you're not Jewish, Christmas trees are fine.

I mean, I guess I can kind of see where they get that. After all, Christmas trees did start out as a pagan thing. BUT, you also have to take into account that that scripture is pulled from the old testament, so he couldn't have been talking about "Christmas" trees because Christ wasn't born yet.

I'm a Christian and I love Christmas trees. Even after reading that verse. I don't worship my tree, I worship God.

What bible are you looking at? I don't see anything about that in the book of Joshua.

I don't see anything wrong with a Christmas tree unless you plan on using it as a false Idol.
