So LO was born on 12/2/12. I had tested positive for group strep B and had five doses of antibiotics. You could literally smell the antibiotics in his pee after he was born. He's given absolutely no sign of being in any trouble at all from this and every nurse I've talked to has mentioned that they thought I should be able to go home today.
Well, the pediatrician in the morning wanted us to stay a full 48 hours to be watched. None of the nurses saw any point. And it seems like the new pediatrician may agree that we can go home tonight (It's 10 PM now and the full 48 would be up at 3 PM tomorrow). We'd see our regular pedi tomorrow, too.
Would you opt to go home? It's all I want to do but I don't know if I'm letting my personal want get in the way of LO's best interests.

Edit: New pedi just came in and said she saw no reason for us to have been kept here.

I wouldn't go home at 10pm at night. The hospitals here won't discharge newborns that late anyway. My two girls were both born in the evening, so had to stay an extra 12 hours or so before going home.

IMO I would wait - there's a reason the dr wants to observe. Perhaps he's waiting to see if he gets a fever, or reaction or whatever. You just never know in newborns. Plus, the extra help with nurses is nice

5 doses? Good lord, that is excessive. How long were you in labor for?

If you think your baby is okay to go home, go with your instincts.

They gave me some every 4 hours after my water ruptured. It was part of the reason I didn't wait at home.

Why? I don't see an issue with the time at all.

Thanks. 10 isn't really late for us. I was wondering if you had like a medical concern behind it.

My hospital policy was that we HAD to stay the 48 hrs cause I was positive for the group B strep and my labor went so fast I was only given antibiotic for 2 hours instead of 3 and they had to monitor my baby for 48 hrs before the hospital would release us. I was okay with it cause I didn't want to take a brand new baby home and chance him getting a fever going home was scary to me let alone adding a fever to the mix!!

If I had missed the antibiotics I wouldn't be leaving, either. Definitely don't blame you there! I was given five doses over a 25 hour period, so the second doctor was pretty satisfied in my case.
