I agree! A friend of mine wanted the electric to be in her name and not the landlords because she has to pay it every month when it comes in...or the money will just be gone.

I don't understand the concept of not being able to put aside money for bills you know will be due.

It must be. That alone is a HUGE compensation. I pay 14k a year for health coverage.

But you never know. Ive not done extensive research on each of the hospitals benefit packages.

I'm fairly certain my mom is offered that in her benefit package (for the school system) but they take a amount out for health insurance...I think.

I believe that all school curriculum should include practical money management skills. I think we are failing our children by not giving them these simple life lessons!

One of my dreams is to open an independent school that has a focus on practical skills through the traditional curriculum.

It would be interesting to find out. We have a few Drs in the family. I guess I could pick their brain next time I see them.

That would be awesome!
That is something I plan on teaching my son. Heck, I guess I already attempt to teach him now at age 4.
It amazes me how ignorant some people are when it comes to money. I certainly will be sure to stress the difference btw a want and necessity..since society has turned things that are wants into things people think they need to survive.
Living below your means is always the smarter route. If every fmaily that has 2 working people borrowed only on half of that income, imagine how much better off they'd be. They probably wouldn't have to borrow much at all because they'd have more cash on hand.

When I was in school* I was actually taught budgeting and balancing checkbooks and all that good stuff. It's needed and important to know, especially at an early age!

Exactly. We were pre-approved for a $490,000 mortgage...that is insane to us. Why carry that much debt, just because you can!? We saved up $50,000 for a downpayment and waited until we knew we'd be completely set financially before jumping into buying a home.

We ended up taking on a $250,000 mortgage with the option of paying an additional 15% of the principle every year....which we already planning on doing in 2013 (we only purchased in Aug. of this year).

Smart budgeting! Good job! I think people get blinded by the "I want" factor & it clouds their judgement. When I make a big purchase like that, I always like to have the attitude of not needing it & if something doesn't fit in my criteria I can simply walk away from it & find something else. I *try* to not get my heart set on things.

Instant gratification is a really big problem and it keeps getting worse with every generation.

That's one great thing about homeschooling. I can pick practical skills that they need to know and add them in. There is a curriculum out there for just about everything. I wish someone had taught me these things when I was younger. My parents always allowed me to spend my money however I pleased once my car insurance and cell phone was paid. I had to learn all of these lessons the hard way. My husband and I went out and bought a new car because we could when we were 22. Then I got pregnant and put on bed rest and we realized we had no cushion because we spent frivolously. Talk about a reality check! I want my kids to learn early so they don't go through what we did.
